Lori,
I used to hunt deer, but Ive really grown out of it. When I was younger and my family was struggling financially, the additional meat of a big doe helped a great amount. However, having grown out of the caveman man bloodlust stage, Ive given it up. I havent hunting in about 6 years or so.
Trophy hunting completely turns me off like nobody could know. People say their culling the herd or whatever. Thats nothing but an out and out lie. They have some funky macho BS thing that makes them have to kill animals for absolutely nothing. Bear and moose hunting in particular make me very angry. Why on earth do you need to kill a bear? There is no relevant reason one could give. Moose either. If you live in a village in the Alaskan bush and getting meat is next to impossible, I have nothing what-so-ever against that. But when you live in Tampa, FL and fly six thousand miles to kill a moose, cause you want to kill a moose; thats bullpoop.
I love to fish, but only in a extremely rare occasions will I actually keep one. I dont think Ive kept a fish in 8 or 10 years. I wont stop others Im fishing with from doing it. Ill try to talk them out of it. But it doesnt always work. Fishing and hunting are kind of related in a way. When you want a fish to eat, you need to take the smaller sized ones. Its the complete opposite of normal thinking. You catch a big fish, you have to keep it right? Wrong. Larger fish are the ones who breed and support the population. Kill them and you take a chance on wiping out the whole lot. Thats why I always laugh when I hear guys say theyre culling deer when theyve passed up 20 of them to kill the one with the biggest antlers. Duh, how stupid could people be. If you could do anything to improve the herd, it would be to cull some of the does. A good buck to doe ratio is very important to a healthy herd. Also, like with the fish, you kill the largest deer, you kill years and years of good genetics and survival ability that deer would impart to its offspring.
Kind of a long winded way to say I agree with you.
Max
