The latest media reports say that phenylephrine "doesn't work." This is a product usually found in "allergy medication."
DEFINE "doesn't work"? Define "work"?
Remember now that this drug was FDA approved a long time back, and has remained approved up to this day. It has been used and is still used--right now--to treat low blood pressure and septic shock. So it is WORKING--right now, for these things.
Does it work as a nasal decongestant?
Well, the earlier propaganda, years back, told us that this was a very effective drug, since they were removing pseudoephedrine from everything, (lest those naughty meth makers bought or shoplifted all the Sudafed in the world--the old style one, with this in it). They said phenylephrine was just as good as pseudoephedrine, at that time.
Now they are saying it never worked... at all?
If we're talking about allergies, who said that nasal congestion WAS an allergy symptom? One of the medical theories is that expanded blood vessels cause blocked nose and so phenylephrine worked, like it works in other cases, to reduce dilated blood vessels in the nose and hence reduce stuffiness.
Even in 2007 published data showed it didn't quite work out that way. Pseudoephedrine has always been shown to reduce nasal mucus (I hope nobody is eating lunch right now) AND reduce nasal stuffiness. But we couldnt have that and have been farmed garbage that phenylephrine was as good at combating nasal symptoms this whole while.
This is cause for a class act brought to trial by all people who have ever bought phenylephrine based products according to a belief that they would have their nasal symptoms reversed--according to FDA propaganda.
Pseudoephedrine works. Problem is that the system did not want it sitting on shelves for the delectation of meth makers. Then--control access. If someone with clear signs of nasal symptoms wants to buy pseudo/e, let them. If some guy looking all tweaky wants to buy 25 packets of Sudafed at once... hm, think again.
Removing a working product to prevent a few meth labbers from making meth is to punish us all for the crimes of the few.
To tell us that another product works just as well that never did is fraud and legally actionable.
Here's how you make your own pseudoephedrine:
We ferment dextrose in the same way we ferment glucose--with yeast. In fact, yeast loves to ferment dextrose even more than glucose:

The yeast ferments the benzaldehyde to produce an intermediate product called PAC ,(phenylacetylcarbinol), which is extracted using organic solvents, and then the PAC is converted into ephedrine in a second catalytic reaction which also requires the use of solvents.
Okay? Now we can make our own damn nasal decongestant.

Here's how you make your own pseudoephedrine:
Source: https://www.acs.org/molecule-of-the-week/archive/p/pseudoephedrine.htmlPseudoephedrine was first known as a natural substance that occurs in shrubs of the Ephedra genus, which grow worldwide. Almost all commercial pseudoephedrine, however, is produced by fermenting dextrose in the presence of benzaldehyde. The primary product, (R)-phenylacetylcarbinol, is aminated to make pseudoephedrine.
