Hi Everybody!
frow.gif

I could use some help as I really don't know what I'm going to do.....

My darlings are now 12 weeks old, eight boys and eight girls, and the delight of my heart. They run to greet me every morning....and love for me to sing to them each night. Oh yes, they are very spoiled, lol

So far there have been no problems with the roos and they are all gentle and seem to get along. But I know the time is coming when I will need to part with some. I could use some advice on how to find homes for them and what has worked for others who have had this problem...

My chickies came from James at Skyline....so they are the best of the best, lol
Thanks for any help.....

I read a post about shipping birds. Do you have to be NPIP certified? If so, how do you do that?

Ron

Are you going to keep a couple for breeding or selling hatching eggs?

Craigs list
Give them to a friend with a Farm or can have roos
find your local thread in the social section and see if someone wants the extras

Send them to freezer camp

You can put an add for them in the signature section of your profile. You can ship live birds. Make sure the buyer is willing to pay the shipping, especially if you give them away.

I gave away one Roo and pullet, so I have three roos to send to a new home.

I hope it works out for you!

Ron

Thanks, Ron.....those are great suggestions and I will certainly use them.....well, except for the freezer camp, lol (just not quite there yet).... appreciate the other ideas, though...
I don't know the first thing about breeding so I guess I will just keep the friendliest....I have one who seems to LOVE me, lol......
I'll be taking new pictures of the roos this evening so I'll have them available to show should anyone be interested....will also look into the details and requirements about shipping as I know nothing about that either...
Thanks again for your help.....

Sure! I've put a few updates on my blog, but here's where it stands now:

- All of the non-EO eggs (SS, Australorp, mixes, etc.) hatched in the incubator - that's 8 out of 8.
- I saw three chicks and a zipping egg under my broody when I last checked. She was doing well with the chicks, so I'll say 4 out of 4 pullet EO eggs hatched under the broody.
- I began with 23 pullet EO eggs in the house. 5 were clear/early quitters. 5 have not pipped (today's day 22) and I see no internal pip or movement when candling, so they must be late quitters (

). Their air cells look great, so it's not humidity. I don't know what caused it, but late quitters are more saddening than early quitters for me. I left them in the incubator anyway.

So, I have 13 EO chicks in the house and 17 EOs overall (25 chicks out of 35 eggs set). I am really pleased. They are adorable. No curled toes, slipped tendons, spraddle leg, etc.

One hatched - quickly and on its own - with a very twisted neck - "stargazer," they call it. It can be nutritional or sometimes just from being in an odd position in the egg. I looked it up and they said Vitamin E and B complex, so she's (pretty sure it's a girl, which is good) on regular vitamin water rations and egg yolk with vitamins B and E from capsules I broke open. She can already move her head pretty well and the twist is less severe. It's been only about 18 hours since hatch, so I think she will be alright. She sort of looks like she is looking over her left shoulder and sometimes walks in circles. It's very silly, but she's active and healthy otherwise. She can be a good little layer if she gets straightened out.

Here's my broody Welsummer, Rosie, with some of her EO chicks.

Wonderful! I'm so happy for you and Rosie. It will be nice to see how she does raising them and if you see a difference in their personalities vs the ones that were hand raised.

So you think stargazer is a female. Is that based on early wing feathers or did you try a different technique?

Update on our cockerel count. We took 5 to the poultry swap, 2 EOs and 3 marans/Easter egger mix. We sold 3, for 8 dollars each. The younger EO went to a nice family that was starting a flock to use in their permaculture garden. The older EO went to an older couple who have a flock of free ranging girls. And the Marans mix went to a lady who has a bunch of Easter Eggers and she wanted to breed for some darker green eggs. I think this guy is perfect. He is part Black cooper Marans and Ameracana with a pea comb, beard and muffs. He should work out nicely.

I'm thrilled to relocate them to nice families. The two unlucky guys are going to get processed next weekend with the help of MD.

i haven't posted in a bit, i need to take new pics of my flock. i think they are about 19-20 weeks old. i have 5 pullets and 2 roos, some of the pullets are making a lot of noise and getting real red in the face, wattles and combs, but it is sooooooo hot here in phoenix i would be surprised if they lay this summer. i rarely have anyone lay in the summer around here. my two boys are getting on my nerves. one is pretty aggressive, he bites and tries to come at me. the other day he snuck up from behind and bit my leg. the freezer is calling. the other is gorgeous, but not very smart. he fell in the pool(it is fenced) but aspirated a bit and ended up on antibiotics, i thought i was going to lose him. he is fine now and he is quite the crower. i am not supposed to even have roos, i just gave away 2 heavenly silkie roos so i could keep these EO roos until the girls start laying. but i do hope it is sooner than later as mr. meanie pants needs to go. i don't want to breed him, but am afraid mr. sinksalot will drown and then i will have nothing. i will try to get some new pics up today.

I bet they lay for you. They are from the Mediterranean, so they were bred for heat.

Should be within the next month

. It was 105 here yesterday and I got 9 eggs from 12 layers.

Mine are 9 to 10 weeks old and one of them tried to crow this week. I really hope Seiji is nice and smart.
