Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Quote: Yes, I am lucky! My neighbors like farm noises.

I have always had tame animals so I don't know. With the Basque it has a lot to do with the breed. Mostly they are friendly. One of the pullets will peck at my hand, but she does not hurt me. I think she is trying to communicate with me. I don't know what she is trying to tell me though. I need a chicken Whisperer..Chickens are very motivated by food, so when they are old enough start hand feeding them meal worms, Black Oil Sunflower Seeds and etc.

I hatched the little guys in Megan's picture and held them every day. They were always calm and friendly. The ones I still have are in a hutch and pen now and they hardly moved when I went by with the lawnmower. The same pen had Red Sar Cockerels, a Dorking cockerel and Partridge Rock chickens in it before and I thought they were going to kill themselves when I went by with the mower. The mower was off too.

The one Megan is getting tomorrow does not peck and is very nice. So far the only mean chicken was a Partridge Rock Cockerel he was getting to be a bit more friendly before he went to freezer camp.

Bye,

Ron
MesPoules - Ron did an amazing job starting these little guys for me! The Marraduna Basques are known to me very friendly. I'm really enjoying mine! Can't wait to start hatching in a couple months!!

We worked on the hoop coop all day, and finally the Basque are in there! (Along with some other mixed breeds I hatched). It was a big push to finish, but the fox was a good motivator! I haven't seen him again, but I know he lives around here. We tried to make it very predator proof, with hardware cloth all over and an apron on the ground. Hope it works.

I'll have to get photos of them sometime soon. :)

That's so excited! Congrats!!!

Quote: i honestly don't know how it happened. there is a doc in our fair metropolis that LOVES to hatch, but lives in an HOA, so he gives all the chicks to this lady who has horse property and her kid does 4H, yada yada, so these chicks were all together in a big brooder. the SFHs were legbanded and i didn't buy the whole lot of basque until they were 3 weeks or so, so a band could have fallen off.........i don't know where the eggs came from

but i have a mille fleur SFH.
Oh wow! I bet that was a surprise! Lol :)

Got home late last night from Spain! Whew that was a long trip home! Picked up all of our animals and brought them home. Man I missed them all! I think our dogs had forgot about the chickens because when we let the Basques out of their coop today, our big dog was so scared of them and tried to get on our laps! Lol I got my new Basque pullet today from Ron. Nervous about introducing her tonight to my original crew. She's bigger than my other girls! I took some pics of the original group of Basques today.
She doesn't have a name yet:

This our rooster we named Chema (pronounced like gem-ah but with a ch sound instead of the g.) We named him after a Basque restaurant owner we know in Spain!:

This is Blue. I love her feathering. It looks like someone painted them!:

I'm so glad to be home!

Good luck with the new introduction, Meg2000000!

I just picked up a little pullet (I hope). She hatched out of a blue egg with some wheaten Ameraucanas, and was being sold as pet quality, since she does not have proper coloring. To me, she looks just like my Basque hen did at that age. She even has the yellow legs. Here she is with my larger Basque pullet:

The introduction of the new pullet is going fine. No crazy fighting or blood! Whew! How long until I don't have to worry about them anymore?

Here's my new little girl. She's sooo friendly!!

Megan, you will always worry about them!

They will sort out the pecking order in a couple of days. By next week it will seem like they were always together.

Two weeks ago I introduced an SG Dorking cockerel to the layer flock. Three of them ganged up on him at first. Today I saw him do a mating dance! Of course the hen took one look at him and ran away

Maybe I can sell my eggs as fertile now?

LOL! I've had my dogs for almost 7 years and I still worry about them constantly! I bet my chickens will be the same :)

The pecking order is being established and they are doing so well! I'm like a proud mother haha The new pullet is temporarily named "Spots" courtesy of the kids I nanny. They are obsessed with her. She lets them pick her up and walk around. I can't believe how great she is! Blue and my unnamed other pullet are still scaredy-cats but the kids have been working with them and they're doing good. Chema, our rooster, is amazing as well! I walked into the coop the other day and the little boy was holding him. He's so mellow!

i must have the most obnnoxious violent EO roo ever, i am ready to put him in the pot. i have to bring the two of these knuckle heads in at night because of the obscene crowing at 4am, they have now decided to fight with each other even though they have been raised together, they gang banged a hen yesterday, i got bit by mr. meanie, mr. sinksalot seems to behave most days except for the constant crowing. i really need to dispatch mr. meanie. he is already so aggressive at this young age, i know it will get worse. i have never had a roo quite this bad so early on. never had a roo charge at me the way he does, i am only 5'2 and have 3 little kids. this boy has got to go. but i can't eat him. yes, he was raised very well and expensive as heck, but something about it makes me want to throw up.
