Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

i must have the most obnnoxious violent EO roo ever, i am ready to put him in the pot. i have to bring the two of these knuckle heads in at night because of the obscene crowing at 4am, they have now decided to fight with each other even though they have been raised together, they gang banged a hen yesterday, i got bit by mr. meanie, mr. sinksalot seems to behave most days except for the constant crowing. i really need to dispatch mr. meanie. he is already so aggressive at this young age, i know it will get worse. i have never had a roo quite this bad so early on. never had a roo charge at me the way he does, i am only 5'2 and have 3 little kids. this boy has got to go. but i can't eat him. yes, he was raised very well and expensive as heck, but something about it makes me want to throw up.

I am so sorry you have a mean roo!

The meanest one I ever had was a Barred Rock. Most people tell me theirs was the nicest rooster they ever had. Just goes to show the variance of behavior with individuals in a breed.

Somewhere in the meat bird section of BYC there is a group that will come out and either process or help you process the Roo.

If not, maybe sell him on Craigslist or see if someone on your state thread will take him. He may do well with a large flock in the country. I have three Cream Legbar roos living in a chicken hutch along with an heritage RIR cockerel and two Ceram Legbar pullets. One of the little roos was going after his brother so I grabbed him and put him in time out(a portable dog crate) for the day. He was fine that evening, so he is not too mean. I will have to watch him. He almost became soup that night and he was more expensive than the Basque chickens....

I know Arizona has an active thread too. Tell them Hi for me!

That's such a drag! I would get rid of him immediately, no matter what the breed. We bring ours to a butcher. For $3, it comes back in a bag looking like something you picked up at the supermarket. If you can't eat him yourself, I'm sure you can find someone that will.

I'm worried I will be in your shoes, eventually. I've never tried to keep two Roos together before. So far, they've been okay, although I did not appreciate one of them latching onto my finger with his beak the other day and not letting go. I've never had another breed that bites like this. It's kind of weird. Mine are still quite young, coming up on 14 weeks.

Mine crow early in the day, but not incessantly. Get that Mr. meanie out of there, even if you have to shoot him and bury him in a hole. :P. He's not worth the headache.
Good luck!

@ pastrymama - That's pretty rough! My best looking roo out of 25 some odd chicks was pretty nigh unbearable, too... He had a bad habit of getting out of the pen and coming after anything in the yard, until Mr. Fox came along and then it was just EO feathers strewn from A to izzard!

Saved me the trouble, - however, now that I've had a couple of EO cockerels for dinner, I kind of wish I'd had the chance to enjoy him too!

All of my other roos have been docile enough, they may drop a wing and dance around my leg, but I can stoop down and scoop them up with one hand and put them into a football carry.

I don't know how to help you about the crowing part... I'm kind of partial to it myself.

How old were they when you processed them?

The boy in my avatar went out at 7.5lbs @ 24wks... he had knee problems. The latest were 28 wks from the guys that hatched Dec 8th.
They were 5lbs apiece.

I would love to get these guys up to 7-8lbs by 24 weeks... I guess that's why they call these things projects!

Oh man! I'm sorry to hear about that! I'm so thankful I lucked out with my roo. Let us know how he tastes! Lol

And don't forget Ron's delicious Basque chicken recipe!
We made it again last night. If you have a pressure cooker, you don't even need to think ahead:
3 p.m. Take bird out of freezer and submerge whole bag in warm water. 4 p.m., cram whole bird in pot, cutting off leg if necessary to fit. Set timer (ours is electric) for one hour.
5 p.m. Drain off an excess liquid, add all the vegetables and spices, cook 20 minutes. The whole house smells wonderful and the bird is tender and perfectly spiced. Yum!

I had a terribly mean Delaware roo one time, the only bad-tempered Delaware I ever had. If the neighbor's dog hadn't caught him I would have had no hesitation to eat him.
Thanks your for the suggestion!

I have a Delaware in the freezer that will be cooked that way soon...

i am not a vegetarian, it's just the thought of eating something that i raised that completely freaks me out. i have food issues.

last year i bought a poult and had a friend raise and butcher it for me for thanksgiving. i paid her of course, but if i had raised the thing, all i would have eaten was mashed potatoes. amazing that i made it thru culinary school with a course in meat fabrication! hum.....

so i did find someone to pick up mr. meanie and of course, i feel bad. she is coming tonight. she and her hubby process their roos all the time with no problem. but i know i will be sad and cry for a week like i did last time when i had an evil roo. it's stupid, i know. he bites me, comes at me, dances around me and i feel bad that he'll get eaten. perfect logic. someone please shrink my head.
