Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

We just hatched our second generation of Basques! They're 3 days old! (Sorry for the horrible pictures!):

These two ladies came home with me from the ranch because they've been broody for a couple of weeks and not eating:

Beatrice is in the front and Mamba is in the back.

With the talk of hatch complications I just looked at the size of the 10 that are going strong at day 13. Looks like 5 big and 5 normal sized. (My scale is in 2 oz. increments so weighing is a guess at best.) So I should be looking at legs closely at hatch, anything else?

Meg...it's nice to have you back..........Hey I've got ghreenfire birds and Skyline birds...........now I need some Spanish blood....write me if you are gonna have some extra eggs....I'm IN for them...........Mike

John, sometimes people ask for honest evaluations of their birds, and here is my honest opinion - not expert mind you! I like the stance of your bird. His color is indeed too light. I would prefer to see a bird with a more substantial build - he is not as filled out in the chest as I like to see (what does he weight?), and his comb is pretty messy. Color would come second with me to type, but in his case neither is what I would like to see. Do you have other options?

Ashandvine, I try hard to work my way through the genetics bog. There are some real whiz folks on here, and they sometimes can thump you up pretty good if you get it wrong! Since Mottle is expressed as a homozygous (both genes the same) recessive, then if both parents express the gene (mottled or mille) then all the offspring would also express it. Genetically:
Parents m/m, m/m, then all offspring would have to be m/m also.

As far as BBS and Lavender, they are actually different genes - the Lavender gene, which controls the color called Self-Blue or Lavender, and the Blue/Black/Splash genetics, which is a gene that modifies Black in a different way. See here if you are interested

Question. I have 5 Marraduna Basque hens and 4 of them are about 4-5 weeks old now. 3 of them are more red and 1 is very light compared to the rest. Does this mean I have 3 boys and 1 girl or is it the other way around? I'll post pictures of them today.

Like Megan said, the opposite is probably true--three pullets and one Rooster.
