Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

This is awesome! Thank you!!!

We just hatched our second generation of Basques! They're 3 days old! (Sorry for the horrible pictures!):

These two ladies came home with me from the ranch because they've been broody for a couple of weeks and not eating:

Beatrice is in the front and Mamba is in the back.

Meg - when do you expect to have eggs available? I would love to add some new blood to my flock! Please PM me with information. :)

Since it was nice out, I got a few pictures of the older Marraduna Basque's.
All four together

The lighter chick

All three same colored chicks. One has a black tail

All again. Lighter towards the bottom left.

Yes, you have a breeding Quad!

One Cockerel and three pullets. They are very nice looking too!

Very cool. Now I got to wait for my two smaller ones to get big enough to see what sex they are. They are only a week old. All these guys are Greenfire lines. I might have to trade a hen for another hen from someone else so I'm not inbreeding these guys,

I finally got pictures of my Basques. There are two cockerels and three pullets. 5/9 shipped eggs hatched; 3 of which I had help get out of the shell. I will provide some thoughts on each but would appreciate your thoughts and input.

Cockerel #1 - yellow legged, very outgoing and friendly, jumps up on me.

Cockerel #2 - Appears to be lighter with light (whitish) legs, a little more standoffish but will climb up on me in the yard

Pullet #1 - Appears to be somewhat mottled, whitish legs (?), friendly

Pullet #1 - Another picture

Pullet #2 - Darker, yellow legs, not mottled, standoffish

Pullet #3 - Darker, yellow legs, not mottled, standoffish

Pullets #2 & #3 are larger than Pullet #1. They are going to be good size hens.

Comments? No pulled punches :) I would like to establish a breeding flock.

Thank you for the pictures! They look great.

It is so hard to pick at this point because you really can't tell conformation(body shape) and it is likely too early to see sprigs on the comb.

The first cockerel and the last two pullets look best for color. For conformation, the first pullet and the first rooter along with pullet #1 and pullet #3.

That works if the Spanish Standard for them wants a straighter keel in the breast. If not then the Third pullet is changed for the second one.

Seriously barring Disqualifiers that are hard to breed out, like comb sprigs I would breed all three pullets to Rooster #1.

I have had my flock of EO,s for about a year now, I got them as day olds and they have been handled daily. All have lived together quite harmoniously up until about a week and a half ago, The roosters seemed to figure out what they are and have become quite scrappy toward each other to the point where I have had to separate them. I had figured it would come to this at some point but reading through this thread it seems as though the EO roosters are a little less aggressive. What I really am beginning to dislike is how nasty they are to the hens, Is this the general consensus of this breed or do I just have a couple of thug roosters holding a ticket to the freezer ?
Thanks John
