Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Thanks for the baby pictures. Fingers crossed here, ours are due next weekend. 9 of the 10 I saw movement in today. Husband wanted to know who I was talking to, silly man.

Hi everyone. This is Johnny, Megan's boyfriend. Meg's taking a well deserved nap right now so I thought I'd upload some pics of the chicks for her. Apologies if the quality isn't great!
The chicks are doing great, the Pita Pintas that we helped out of their shells (they're the sticky looking ones in the pics) are looking like they're definitely going to make it. We're so proud of them!
The EO's are strong little suckers, they're already scratching at their bedding and going out exploring when we open up the brooder.

They look very pretty and healthy!

I love your Basques, Megan200000!

Could someone refresh my memory on sexing these chicks? I know the brownish chicks are usually girls, but wasn't there a theory about wing color? Some of my chicks are brownish, some whitish, and some in between ( yellowish). Are the chicks with mostly white wings boys? They're only 2 weeks old, so I know waiting will tell me for certain, I'm just trying to access things and I can't stop myself from speculating!

Hey Bucka! I got to where I could make and educated guess on the chicks from my original pairings, but I put together a pen of darker red hens and a richly (red) colored cock and all bets were off. I sold some chicks as pullets and had to take them back... I felt like a real doofus.
Anyhoo, watch their stance, and who moves to the corners and hides vs who rears up to check out noises... take notes or mark them and check back by 6 wks. You'll be able to tell by the comb and wattles by then. Just have fun and enjoy them in the time being.

There can be a lot of variation in the feathering. Multi colored birds are more difficult to breed to a standard than are single colored birds. Depending on where you got the chick from can have a lot impact on the quality of your stock. This is true for any breed of chicken. I once read in a book by Harry Lamon that if a master chicken breeder acquired show quality standard bred stock from another master breeder, it would still take about three years for the new breeder's lines to settle out, because people are different, and make different decisions on who goes into the breeding pen. (or something like that

How come my basque pullet has different coloring?
