Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Good luck with your hatch Dahlisgrams!
I'll be setting shipped eggs around Valentine's Day, but other breeds. I'd love to throw a few Basque eggs in with them, but we'll see. Only one of my two hens appears to be laying now, and not very frequently yet.

Yay!!

Mine are laying like crazy now. They started back up this week for all three of them. The pullet is going to be laying sometime this month.

No added lighting here either. We're at 45N 69W. I did get a Basque egg today. It's tiny, but it's a start. I don't think I'll be hatching my own eggs for a while anyway, as the Ameraucanas don't look like they are even considering laying an egg. The shipped eggs will have to keep me entertained.

Thanks! Valentines Day is a great time to set, I think. Maybe throw just a couple in to test... you never know though, they could pick up by then. Good luck!

Quote: They seriously need to get in gear, MD. You have that cadillac of an incubator to fill! I totally want some of your eggs when you have some extra and can spare them. Your flock is beautiful and I love where it's headed. You definitely have a good eye for the breed.

My Ameraucanas are fussy about laying too. They're laying now though, hard to believe. They're starting to lay pretty well overall. A couple of holdouts of course.. but no added lighting.

Shipped eggs are entertaining, especially when they hatch well.

How far south are you, Ron? I'm about 37° 80"

My girls still aren't kicking in yet (no added lighting)

I am at 38.67. Hours of daylight today was: 10.19 hours and dawn to dusk was 11.15 hours.

You are a bit further south than me, but not that far. You should start seeing eggs from them soon I got two from the three pullets and one from my EE--they share the same pen.

I hope you start getting a bunch from them soon! Have you tried Big Ole Bird from Southland Organics?

No I haven't - I'm feeding two hours of 'Scratch and Get It' by Hep Yo'self Organics in the afternoons!

That and free choice feed store layer breeder pellets. That could be part of them problem, but that's what I'm giving them to work with. My birds will need to thrive on rustic and easily available. I have supplemented with homegrown greens, 50+ birds have rolled through 12 bushel basket sized broccoli, 16 5-8lb cabbages w wrapperleaves, and 12 Brussels Sprouts plants with the majority of sprouts harvested off them, but still a good cluster of marble sized sprouts plus leaves - just in the past 60 days. I'm going to need to up the forage planting beds for next winter... I'll probably supplement with some baled alfalfa to get us through to Mid March.

Dang MD, that's a lot of veggies. Mine love alfalfa. I also give them calendula flowers on occasion and they like that too. Actually, they like almost everything.
