Does the thought that Yellow are males and reddish colored are females in the chicks or is it best to wait till 3-4 weeks to tell males? I had 13 hatch from the 25 shipped and have I believe 50/50 if the above theory is true.

That thought can hold true in certain pairings, after growing out about 5 hatches from my original pen, I could tell by the chick down (as long as they weren't recessive white). But when I put together my second, darker feather pen, the chicks threw me for a loop. I sold some cockerels as pullets and wound up having to take them back.

The barring gene in the EO is sexlinked, hence the females only have one copy and should be darker than the males.
But the dot on the head is invisible in the wheaten based fluff. (I least I think that's right- gene whizzes please correct me if I'm wrong!

Don't I wish

Good times yesterday! Got to meet up with Flat Rock Farm, Skeffling Lavender Farm, Lindylou, Haplessrunner, Rebcat and many other EO owners that don't hang out on forums. I was stuck to my truck, - Laingcroft, sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you! Claire of SLF reports her original Basque hen is still laying well in this her fifth year.

Good to know and another plus for this great breed.
It's kinda neat how Basque Hens bring cool people together!

I'm a little to far away for the meet up but glad you all had a good time.

I had a good day yesterday also. There are now 6 new basques in OR, and hoping 2 more slow pokes join the party today.

I'm glad to see this breed gaining popularity! I have 6 in the incubator and it is the end of day 20. One has pipped and two other eggs are shaking and wiggling a good bit! Got these eggs from a friend of mine who has a flock of 30+ Basques in N. Georgia. I can't wait to meet them and see if their personality really is as great as they say.
