Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Pics
hi everybody,

just wanted to ask a couple questions about the EO's. i did scroll through the thread but at over 50 pages my vision started getting a little blurry....anyway, just trying to nail down what we are looking for as far as keepers for breeding stock goes. i saw that claire mentioned type, yellow legs and single comb, and that the redder chicks tend to have the most black, which i understand is not desirable. anybody have anything else to add?

thanks in advance. special thanks to claire for sharing her endless knowledge and james for being such a dedicated marraduna breeder AND for keeping the prices affordable. double whammy on that one, skyline.

Great pics Sebastopol!
I believe we are gonna start seeing a Basque movement in North America. Now all we need is everyone of the Basque here. I would love to have some Gorria Basque.

They are so cute...I have noticed they grow fast. Working on getting a pic of my little chick..tho it has black in it..not sure if it is too much...
Happy Holiday to everyone!

Chicks are doing great. Had one that got squished under the pile of others and one currently has a splayed leg. It still fights and gets around good so we are trying to get it big enough to butcher. The other 32 are growing great. Already seemed to be acclimated to the colder weather "with a light" just fine. They seem to like their new home. I understand being busy this time of year. Call me sometime when you get some free time. Also if anyone wants to see pics of our chickens and farm you can see them on Facebook.

Here's some up dated pictures on my crew, reaching 7-8 weeks old now, some great colors and I have to agree with James and the others, they simply are not like any other chickens they don't really have any fear of humans !
The first picture is the roo I am leaning to as number 1 as he's seeming to conform the most so far in my opinion, feel free to comment on that one...
and there's three speckled pullets which I really like amongst the brown and blonde ones.

They're outside all the time now although it's dipping into freezing and past at night so I have a little heat still on them but will back it off in the next few days

man, I've been missing out! I just got a notification that Thatbloke posted, that's all, none of you others. Got some catching up to do!

Cydney, I am sorry, but there will be other chances for sure. They do grow fast, and you will find them endearing, even just 2. We got ours in 2008 and 2002, we hatched 2 chicks all year (2 little ginger pullets hatched by a friend), my Brower Top Hatch fried about 70 EO eggs from our trio that summer

You guys probably would have had EOs a year earlier if not! You will manage it next time!

Some that look really black can get lighter at the 8-12 weeks stage. At this stage, don't rule any out! I know James and most of the Canadians are certainly putting temperament up there as a requirement, so that has some weight IMO! James has some nice birds, so don't be shy to try again with his. They are still very vigorous after 4 years from that trio.

Thanks Maggies Dad for transferring Naturespaces question about race, sorry I missed it here, but I did answer in some detail on our site.

Sebastopol, cute babies. So neat to see so many the same colour

Lovely Roo Young Bloke, I see your birds and they could be mine! So many similar colours! I have a roo like your first guy who is very nice, bet he's the one from those early pictures! My guy like yours, I am proud of, you should be proud too. My Guy, Sonny Jim, loves a cuddle like his Dad! They both reach into the scoop for scratch before I give it to every one but neither are pushy. Aren't they lovable chickens? And they grow so fast.

Young heritage, sorry about that one, they are bouncy little boogers aren't they? Now you know what we were talking about! A few of you do

I am glad you believed us, it is so good for the breed to be spread further!

Lagunitas, how old are yours? Some of the leg colours and side sprigs really don't show that well till 8-10 weeks. We often have people post all their EOs for keepers on the site and we do a "group choose"/opinions then the person can choose what they like. Try and keep track of who is the biggest early on, like 4-8 weeks. They can vary a little and they can pretty well catch up, but it may just be something to keep track of for meaties. I am not breeding any tiny ones and have been lucky that the best coloured are also the best sized and type.

I am in love with my chicks for this year, they are friendly (despite being broody raised) and gorgeous (if I do say so myself!)

Happy Holidays everyone, whether you have EOs or not. Grin Maybe you will in 2012!
