Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

My 16-17 week old EO roo crowed for the first time on Saturday! It was so cute! For the past couple of days he crows once at 9 am, we let them out of the coop, and he crows another time. After that he's quiet all day and night. I hope he stays quiet!

Our first rooster, a hatchery Black Giant, only crowed once or twice a day - just before dawn. Four months later I got another rooster, and they haven't stopped crowing since!

Quote: Yesterday my 16 weekish cockerel Seiji was crowing, so I moved him into the garage. I moved him in there last night and moved him back out this morning since I have to hide my roosters. The other three are not crowing yet. It is a hassle to move them but on the plus side I am spending more time with him. This morning he hopped up to my shoulder and wanted to take a ride from there. I moved him back to my arms to carry him though. I did not want him to jump down and pick a fight with the 25 pound Maine Coon Cat I have....

Anyone wanting to test hatch some Basque eggs for me? I'm not setting anymore eggs in the incubator, but I really need to see if my Basque eggs are fertile, hatchable or not. I have about a dozen eggs saved up if anyone is interested, please PM me.

Well, thought I'd finally share a few photos. Found our first Basque eggs today, so excited!

All fertile, cute little things. This is my 7 year old daughter, so these are small.

The "Padron" of the group... he's a beauty, but goes against everything you've heard about Basque roosters.
He's very spunky, crows a lot, and challenges us nearly all the time. Can you say "soup pot" for Blanco.

Here's a great pic of "Pedro" and the ladies. He's a very docile roo, crows only occasionally, but enjoys the hens.
You can catch a glimpse of a Breda hen, and then 3 Basque ladies, including a pure white. This is the group
responsible for the eggs.
Just wanted to share some photos. BTW, the hens are as delightful and friendly as can by, easy to handle.
Pedro is a little more cautious, but friendly, unlike Blanco, who's just over the top.

Thanks!

Nice photos, bayocum!

I have two cockerels in with the girls, 17 weeks old in two days. The dominant male has been challenging me some. Not an outright attack, but some dancing around and raising his hackles a little. I pick him up everyday, but today I had to pick him up 4 times before he would stay settled down. I'm going to keep working with him and hope he improves. Otherwise, he will head to freezer camp.

I'd love to hatch some out for you. I have a great hen (silkie) that is a fantastic mother. Can you ship them to me? Where did you get your Basques?

Hi bayocum and welcome!

Most of the Basque are originally from Green Fire Farms. James Meeks is one of the first breeders selling them other than Green Fire and if my memory is correct, James got his from them. I bought 15 hatching eggs from James and hatched them as a part of Mahonri's Easter Hatchalong. I hatched 11 of them.

If you get some you will love them!

Is the dominant one whitish with white legs? I have one that I might process this weekend along with a Marans. He fluffs up at me but calms down quickly. I have two others that are very nice.

The Marans is very nice but I am not keeping those for breeding.

Good luck! Sorry you're having trouble with your roo but at least he'll taste good! :p
