I posted this on the Northern-California thread and thought I'd share with you guys too!
I picked up my Spanish chicks Sunday from Ron. He did such an amazing job hatching them and got a great hatching rate!

I picked up 10 Marraduna Basques and 6 Pita Pintas. Both are from the Basque region in Spain.
Two of my Basques were special needs. The one that was trying to hatch upside down died last night. Ron and I both figured he wasn't going to make it. I have one more special needs chick left. She flops around on her back and can't stand up. She has a normal amount of energy but just can't seem to stand up. I'm giving her some baby vitamins that were recommended to me, as well as both save-a-chick packages and vinegar in her water. We've nicknamed her/him Pinkman because she has two pink leg bands on. She's trying so hard, I hope she makes it!
I took individual pictures of my little guys Monday (everyone but Pinkman). They all have leg bands now so I can track their progress. They are so fast it's nice to be able to tell them apart by the colored bands! So without further ado, please meet my new little loves:

Ron,
Yes, the dominant roo is the whiter one. He can be ok, but there are times when he just doesn't want to relax. I've held him many times and if I get down on his level that sometimes helps.

Is the pure white normal in the Basque's, I got some just last week from Greenfire Farms and it looks like there is one which is going to be all white. Has anyone else come across with white Basque?

Recessive white.... not in the Spanish Standard.


Look back to the first few pages of this thread., you'll see some white in James' flock.

No, all white is not normal but i don't think yours will stay white. How old are they? They start out all yellow. See Meg20000s post above. Maybe they sent one of a different breed?

Usually the white ones have a non standard pattern and white legs. They are supposed to have yellow legs. Look back at the first group of posts on here for a link to the Spanish Standard.

The light colored ones are very nice and will look good in the flock. Please post pictures. We love to see them.

Hi Ron,
White may not be normal or in the Stanard...but...it might be useful in recreating the Llodana EO. Remember those articles I posted on them last year on the original EO forum run by Lavendar Farms?? From what I read they seem to be a diluted buff columbian and maybe laced too. ( it's been a while and I don't remember exactly but it is all there online. ) So one could either take fowl and keep making them paler and paler...or one could take the recessive white and add color to it.

I had several whites, culled them for breeding purposes ( sent them to another farm to happily lay eggs)

Nice photos, bayocum! I have two cockerels in with the girls, 17 weeks old in two days. The dominant male has been challenging me some. Not an outright attack, but some dancing around and raising his hackles a little. I pick him up everyday, but today I had to pick him up 4 times before he would stay settled down. I'm going to keep working with him and hope he improves. Otherwise, he will head to freezer camp.

Is the dominant one whitish with white legs? I have one that I might process this weekend along with a Marans. He fluffs up at me but calms down quickly. I have two others that are very nice. The Marans is very nice but I am not keeping those for breeding. Ron

My dominant one is the multicolored/calico one with yellow legs. I was pleased that he was very well-behaved when I visited this morning. He has so much character. The whitish one with white legs is bigger, but not dominant. I will be really happy if they can coexist without fighting, as I like both of them a lot. My other two Basque cockerels are in a separate bachelor pen, and they are exceptionally skittish. I can't even get near them.
