Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Central Virginia - yup - East Coast.

And you would be certified chicken crazy to do that one. :D

Haha not again! I just drove from Ohio to California when I moved here. I don't think ill be driving back that way until maybe around Christmas time. I appreciate the offer though. Maybe when I come back to Virginia beach if you have any EO's available I can come by.

Got a 19 week old rooster this morning from Ronott1. This guy is gonna be around for awhile to fertilize the upcoming hens.
I think hes a very very handsome young guy! Hopefully he will get along with the rest of the flock until i get him some girls to keep him company!
He's got a BRAMD NEW JUST BUILT 8x12 pallet coop all by himself right on the outside of my other coop where the rest of the flock is to adjust into which should be real comfortable.
Havent decided on a name just yet. My father wants to name him, so when pops comes to visit he'll have a name!
Thanks again Ron. Your the man!
Handsome young man!! Ron's the best huh? :)

Blue, green, PP pink and PP red look like boys. Of course its a guess but looks like it. I'm not fond of the spirals either. At that age I like to use the mini colored zip ties. Just gotta keep your eyes on them so they don't grow too big and cut their leg off. Is this your first set of chicks? I'm sorry if you've done answered this.
I hope you are enjoying them.
Thanks. We don't know a lot about the Pita Pintas so any guess is good! These are my first set up baby chicks. I have 3 pullets and a rooster from Ron (he got them from you originally I believe.) We are enjoying this breed a lot!

My girls layed fine up to 104F in Central Va. They were panting a little, but not affected as bad as my BAs and BRs...

My best hen layed a 66gram ex large the other morning - she's 39 wks.
Congratulations on that huge and beautiful egg! Hmmm.. an egg scale sounds awesome to have!

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got 12 MB eggs from a guy in Florida Greenfire line and 15 MB eggs from James along with 5 Lav Orps and 5 Speckled Sussex. I just got done candleing them and they are all growing but 2. Looks like I am going to be in the Marraduna Basque business. Thats pretty exciting.
Congrats and good luck with the hatch!! We love pictures so make sure to share if you have time! :)

welcome home, Megan -- so cool to see all your babies getting bigger!
Thanks lady!

Doing well, thanks. I have decided to wait plus my wife is doing a bantam BCM project. Trying to focus on the EOs and black and blue LF Plymouth Rocks. Plus the pigs and the garden. Then 2300 feet of fence..... :)
Wow you guys sound busy! Keep up the good work! :)

I'm wondering if I have too many cockerels.
1- Welsummer
2- EOs
10- ladies
Right now we have:
1-EO cockerel (back-up with white legs) with 3 Orpington pullets
1-EO cockerel (main man) with 2 EOs, 3 Welsummers, 2 other pullets
1-Welsummer cockerel that wants to be with the Welsummer girls and such, but ends up without any pullets because he jumps the fence and struts around trying to impress the girls who are behind fences.
I'm in need of more EO pullets, but limited by space.
I think I either need to get rid of the back-up EO or Welsummer cockerel to make everyone happy.
When free ranging happens it crazy here!
LOL Wow that's a full house over there! Sounds fun!!

How long ago did you move here? That's a long drive!

FINALLY I got my hands in a couple young Basque chicks about around 2 weeks old. Thanks a lot to papabrooder for coming off of those chicks for us, it was really a favor. Here are the 2 chicks.. Chick #1 Chick #1 wing Chick #2 Chick #2 wing I'm hoping for 2 pullets. Can anyone see any early signs? I read the females have more of a grey wing coloring and males have the more black in the wing? If that'correct, i think I might have 1 boy and 1 girl. Either way I super excited to grow these out!!

My theory early on was that the pullets had the darker wings with black or dark grey and the males had lighter brown with white. If I had to guess chick number 1 is a cockerel that will have nice coloring. #2 is a pullet.

Congratulations Mike!

Yes, since you have the two colors you probably have one of each.

You will know for sure at about 6 weeks old.

Ron

Nice! Nice! I wish I would have known them before I picked them out Lol. But I'm happy they will grow up together, they're gonna be my first breeding pair in a few months.
About how many weeks do the pullets start laying?

Oh Ron my Rooster attacked my feet this morning. Lol. Idk what's wrong with him. You think he might be angry he's away from his old flock? Or did he ever challenge you? What should I do? Me and him are gonna have to learn to get along because this is home now.

The first day I brought him home he was fine. He followed me around the garden for a few hours, he ate out of my hand and was super friendly.
Do they have mood swings? Could it have been my white socks showing through my scandals?

Quote: He never challenged me. When they do I usually pick them up and hold them until they calm down. Is he with the new chickens yet? They do look down sometimes and think your feet are a predator.

I don't know about the white socks, but my SG Dorking does not like the orange cordless lawn mower. My Marraduna cockerel Seiji did peck me once. I held him for a while until he calmed down and then put him into the dog kennel for the day. He never did it again. He was pretty easy. Some have posted that it takes more time sometimes. He is also getting into the terrible teens age too. That could last for several months but they usually calm down afterwards.

Since he was nice for you at first he will probably not be mean.

Bye,

Ron
