Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Has anyone seen a floppy comb on their rooster? We have two nearly mature roosters and the biggest, prettiest one has a floppy comb. We have pulled him out and set him aside but dang I like everything about him except that comb!
If it is just a floppy comb, breed him with your straightest combed hens and see what you get.

A floppy comb is supposed to be fixable. Not a DQ?

There were some questions previously about the white birds being truly white. I got back a cockerel (was supposed to be a pullet and I promised them I would take any back that were the wrong sex). As you can see, he is completely white except his eye is amber colored, so he is not an albino. His feathers are a little dirty in a few spots from the ride in the transport box, but he is completely white, including his legs and beak.

That is a great looking chicken!

Thanks Ron, for the comment on the comb. We will probably go with the other rooster first next spring. However I think I will breed the floppy comb on a limited basis to see what he throws. Wasn't sure how dominant that floppy comb would be. It really flops right from the base. Don't know that he had an injury but can't be sure he didn't either. He was housed in a smallish pen most of the time growing up.

There is a lot of simliarity between the Bosque and the Rhodebars coloration, especially the roos. We will be trying to keep ours looking different from each other if possible.

That was a fantastic story! It makes me feel better about some of the broody madness that goes on over here.

My best hen layed a 66gram ex large the other morning - she's 39 wks.

Beautiful, shiny egg!!!

It has what looks like a white powdery glaze and is a lovely purpley brown...... It is just impossible to get a good photo that really shows the colour. I don't have any white egg layers or I could photograph her egg up against the white ones so you could really see the" purpleyness". Pretty....
I would love to see your plum-colored egg!

I am completely swamped, as I may have mentioned earlier. I clicked on "new posts" and it took me back two weeks on this thread! Yikes!!!

There was some discussion about floppy combs on the Legbar Thread. Someone said it might be from a skull deformity and may not be inherited.

Beautiful! How cool is that?!

The wing feathers are the first ones that come in. You have to look at those within the first three days or so. The ones you see now will molt out and then the first real look will come in. Then there will be the third Mold that happens at around 16 weeks. Actually, I am still getting a feather change right now. My Cockerels are starting to change color as the new feathers come in.

:love  They are beautiful. I will get pictures of the two I am processing this weekend so you can see what they look like.

Ohh I didn't know the first 3 days thing! In that case I have no idea! Lol Thanks Ron :)

Interesting about the comb. When did it start flopping over?

I totally agree about the Basque/Rhodebar roo similarity. Some of them could be feather twins!

here are my two EO basques at 6 days old -- the one on the left definitely has dark grey wing colors coming in (and still has a discernible dot on its head, don't know if that means anything), while the one on the right has almost cream-colored feathers, no dark at all -- and as you can see, its wing feathers seem to be coming in unevenly/incompletely? there's a big gap between the big outermost ones & the ones higher up -- should this be a concern, or is it just a baby thing?

the righthand one is also the smallest of the six i have, and has had troubles keeping its back end tidy, although hasn't gotten completely pasted up, & i've been doing my best to assist... it also seems slightly less vigorous than the others, i see it less often jostling at the food dish & more often asleep.

They are such cute chicks! I hope pasty butt pulls through. Idk about the wing thing. My turkey poult was doing that and when he feathered in, it all came together so maybe the little one will get its wing feathers soon!
You hatched these eggs right?
