Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

They are such cute chicks! I hope pasty butt pulls through. Idk about the wing thing. My turkey poult was doing that and when he feathered in, it all came together so maybe the little one will get its wing feathers soon!
You hatched these eggs right?

no, i didn't hatch them -- got them as one-day-old chicks from a local breeder (Deann Disilva). i hope it does okay, too -- and still hoping both might be girls, although given the differences in color, not sure i'll get that lucky!

here are my two EO basques at 6 days old -- the one on the left definitely has dark grey wing colors coming in (and still has a discernible dot on its head, don't know if that means anything), while the one on the right has almost cream-colored feathers, no dark at all -- and as you can see, its wing feathers seem to be coming in unevenly/incompletely? there's a big gap between the big outermost ones & the ones higher up -- should this be a concern, or is it just a baby thing?

the righthand one is also the smallest of the six i have, and has had troubles keeping its back end tidy, although hasn't gotten completely pasted up, & i've been doing my best to assist... it also seems slightly less vigorous than the others, i see it less often jostling at the food dish & more often asleep.
I would wager that the left one is a female. you said it has a dot on it's head. is it just a darker orange spot or is is black? I had one with a black spot and she ended up being the 'deer' color pullet. i would also guess the other is a cockerel with the light colored feathers.

the dot is sort of caramel-colored against the yellowy fuzz -- you can just barely see it in this photo.

MEG 2000000 ... our Basque rooster with the floppy comb is 4-5 months old. We noticed his comb flopping a couple months ago.

I would also say you have one of each gender! Mine are 3 1/2 weeks and I'm noticing the males are lighter colored where the girls are darker. Some of the females feathers are a reddish color but I can definitely see the males now (and not just because of the larger combs and wattles.) Take lots of pictures! They grow way too fast! They are so precious!

That's interesting. Well, if you don't use him as part of your breeding program, at least he's special! :)

thanks all -- actually, the one with the grey in the wing feathers (on the left) is lighter colored in its baby down than the other, it's a canary yellow while the other is more reddish -- but the new wing feathers are definitely darker.

and i think since the runty one is smaller, i'd been presuming that would be the girl! although they're both small/delicate compared to the monster orp chicks) -- i offered them some plain yogurt, with some of their feed sprinkled on top, but they wouldn't touch it -- but i AM giving them ACV in their water, & some grit just in case they feel the need.

Ron - Maybe Laura could give her little guy some vitamin drops for a couple days. The baby kind without iron. What do you think? It may help him catch up.
Yes!

On the California-Northern thread I recommended plain yogurt and grit for baby chickens for Laura. I do not remember if I included the baby vitamins without iron, but that or one of the rooster booster or save a chick with electrolytes and vitamins.

I have only had one that did not make after the first week. That one just never did grow and the big ones smashed her.

Something with B vitamins--sometimes there is a thiamine deficiency in chicks. He looks fine in the picture and sleeping a lot is common in chicks. Pasty butt usually goes away quickly. It is caused by stress. Did the ones I hatched for you have pasty butt?

The ones from the hatchery that did not make it all died within three days of getting them, so the ones that made it to on week recovered.

any tricks for getting them to EAT the yogurt? they absolutely wanted nothing to do with it, a day or two ago...

Laura - have you tried giving him Poly-V-sol without iron? (spelling?) You can get it at CVS or Walgreens in the baby vitamin section. Try giving him one drop in the morning an one drop in the evening for three days and see if that makes a difference.

My big chickens love yogurt but the babies won't touch it.. Although they love stepping in it! Lol

Ron - None of the ones you hatched for me have had pasty butt. Besides the two that didn't make it in the first couple of days, all of them are super hardy and healthy. You did a fabulous job!! :)
