Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

My EO girls started laying in late June. I did a test hatch of 8 eggs and hatched out 5 healthy chicks. One candled clear, one was a quitter, and one internally pipped but never made it further. Overall I'm very happy and have set several more eggs. I love this breed and have a real interest in developing the future EO's of America.

Congratulations on your hatch! This breed is definitely a great one!

you're going to laugh at me, but as this is the first week of the semester and my schedule is INSANE (i just got home from school a few minutes ago), I actually haven't had a chance to buy the vitamins! but s/he (the woman i got the chicks from actually guesses that the small one is female & the other male, the opposite of the guesses here, so i'm staying gender neutral for now!) is doing ok, still smaller than the rest but definitely growing; still having some troubles in the personal hygiene department, but i'm lending a hand with that. so far, so good -- all six chicks are a week old today, & are now chirping around on some pine shavings instead of just paper towels -- they were TERRIFIED of the shavings at first, which was absolutely hilarious, they all ran around their brooder box trying to get away from the shavings, but kept discovering more!

gotta find some dinner now,
laura
Some times I post on here that I'm going to do something and then don't find the time for a while. I'm always like "shoot, I told everyone I was going to do it and I haven't!" LOL I can't even imagine how busy you are as a teacher! I always wanted to be a teacher but now I'm looking into being a Vet Tech.

That's so funny about the shavings! Chicks are a great source of entertainment in our house!

About the Corid - I don't have powder, I have the liquid kind, but it says 5 days for treatment and 21 for preventative. You need to do the 5 day treatment.

Hope you got some sleep last night! It's FRIDAY!!

Well they are definitely hanging out in the nest boxes because I cleaned out some poop the other day. All of their faces are SUPER red and getting redder by the day! What other signs should I be looking for?

Eggs!

Is your rooster covering the girls? He will start a week to so before they start to lay.

Hope you get some soon. I had a girl start at 22 weeks.

Lol well that'll be easy to look for! I'm not sure if my roo is covering the girls yet. I have them at a ranch 15 minutes away. It's great not having to worry about my neighbors complaining about the crowing, but it sucks that I don't get to watch them 24/7!

The pullet with the biggest, reddest comb is the one I saw my rooster mate with several days ago.
I should take a photo of their combs. Of the 3 pullets, one has a good size red comb, one has a small red comb, and the other has what looks like a pea comb. Does this ever occur? Her comb is so small it is kind of hard to determine.

It is my "almost white" pullet from Skyline that lays the wonderful plum coloured egg. So far they have been turned into crepes or omelettes before I have managed to get a picture. I was puzzled to see the colour seems to fade as the egg ages and is at its best colour in the first few hours after laying. It seems the Croad Langshan lays a plum coloured egg that does the same thing. Mind you from the pictures their eggs can get really seriously plum!!!.......funny the odd things you find out. I will keep trying but I am a bit of a techno disaster....... If all else fails google up an image for Croad Langshan eggs. There is a picture with four eggs in a bowl and the croad one is about right on my computer.
