Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

It is my "almost white" pullet from Skyline that lays the wonderful plum coloured egg. So far they have been turned into crepes or omelettes before I have managed to get a picture. I was puzzled to see the colour seems to fade as the egg ages and is at its best colour in the first few hours after laying. It seems the Croad Langshan lays a plum coloured egg that does the same thing. Mind you from the pictures their eggs can get really seriously plum!!!.......funny the odd things you find out. I will keep trying but I am a bit of a techno disaster....... If all else fails google up an image for Croad Langshan eggs. There is a picture with four eggs in a bowl and the croad one is about right on my computer.

I've seen some eggs that shade come through my EO girls... It's interesting how much the color can vary from the same hen. ( You know you're close to your girls when you know them by the shape of their egg!)

Lord-ah-mercy....I had no idea there was so much information about EO's as there is on this thread....Thanks James, Claire, Susan, the Guy from Spain and everyone who contributes. I have babies ordered from James and now I can hardly wait. I have raised Chickens and Turkeys for over 50 years and have spent ALOT of time and money on a particular Heritage Turkey breed. Another generation or two and I will be at the goal I set......now I want to concentrate on EOs. I am so excited about these. I started reading at post 1 and now I'm at 300..........I have alot more learning to do. I'm looking forward to communicating with you all in the future about EOs.......Thanks again for all your work.

they sure are wonderful birds. It's nice to see others taking on this breed. What kind of Turkeys are you working with?

Thanks Ron...I've learned that it is the little things that help alot.....like a drop or two of apple cider vinegar in the babies water to help replenish electrolytes.....or pulverized rolled oates to help with "potty butt" I guess its like that ole saying..."the older I get the more I find out how smart my parents and grandparents were...." .......Looking forward to helping anyway I can.......Mike

natuerespace......Regal Red Turkeys...pull it on the net and it will tell you about them and Dr. Walker....he hekped keep them from going extinct. He taught me most of what I know about them..........Mike

Hey guys. Here's my two EO chicks. I think they are about 3 weeks. Definitely under 4 weeks This is the one with the dark head. This is the one with the lighter head I need to name them. I'll let my dad do that lol. They eat Soo much!! Luke my meat birds do. Constantly see them with their heads in the feeder. They are really healthy though. I'm really liking them so far. I have 11 EO eggs from Mrs Fluffy Puffy in the bator going on day 5 or 6 I think :). They were in the mailbox for a few days and I didn't know before I got to them so I hope I still have some luck with them. And 1 was cracked :( I'm also ordering 25 EO chicks from James Meeks. They are from his original line so I'm really excited about getting those in OCT. I've really been contemplating switching over my ENTIRE flock to EO's. Once I have some laying to keep eggs stocked up. I feel like its kind of a responsibility of mine to preserve anything I can from my heritage.... But for now here's more pictures of the lighter chick!

Hi Mike,

I agree with you completely! I plan on always having some of the Marraduna Basque. I am also looking into the Penedesenca's. They also come from Spain and do well in the heat we have here.

It is hard to tell at three weeks, but the one with the dark head may be getting Rooster patterns on the feathers. You will know for sure in 3 or 4 more weeks. They are monster eaters and fast growers. I hatched some Heritage RIRs and they are similar for eating and growth.

These EO Basque still have Utility--They look good and are truly dual Purpose with great meat and hopefully soon I will see how well they lay eggs.

Bye,
