Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

At the risk of boring people with more photos of my small flock, here they are (again!):

Marroi, my brown girl that resulted in the moldy donut wager:  See how big her comb is?  She's the only girl with yellow legs.

Puntu, the speckled pullet.  Her comb is medium size:

Iluna, my freak of nature pullet.  She is rather small, and so is her comb: It looks like a straight comb here, but head-on, I think it looks like a pea comb.

Iluna comb shot:

The two roosters.  Eddie, who is too dark but has yellow legs:

And Zuri, who has a bigger body shape, but is submissive to Eddie.

I don't think any of my flock has correct coloring, although I haven't really studied up on any of this.  Right now, I'm just hoping to get some eggs!

Very nice birds! You have a good start. If it were me, I'd pair up Marroi, and your Milles pullet (speckled) with your second roo, Eddie. Marroi is a nice Marraduna. Her comb is large and possibly missing one point, there should have between five and seven). It's not horrible though. She is a little mousy on her back, but also nothing serious. She seems to have nice size and has lovely yellow legs. Puntu will get more "Milles Fleurs" colored as she ages, but I find these girls to have the best size- nice and chunky, something we need to keep in the EOs. She looks as though she has a sizable side sprig though, so you will have to keep an eye on the offspring. Eddie has good size and looks much bigger than Zuri (is he older?). Although he has too much grey on his chest, my lead roo for two years did as well and I have gotten some lovely offspring from him, with a temperament that can't be beat. Again, with him having a side sprig, you will have to watch the offspring. You are going to want to select for a clean, single comb with 5-7 points. Zuri's comb, however, is much more obvious. I also think with the "look" he has (expression), he could be quite aggressive if made dominant roo. Just a hunch, but having dealt with hundreds of these boys, you get a feel for that look.
Eddie and Morroi will throw homozygous yellow legged babies with good size and possibly too much grey, but defiantly a good start.
Eddie and Puntu will throw heterozygous yellow legged babies with great size and probably good temperament.
I would probably not use Ituna. Although she has pretty llodiana colour, her shape and comb make me think of a brahma. Wonder if is she is mixed. I have never seen a shape like that in an Euskal Oiloa.
These are just my opinions, on a group of lovely birds. Regardless, they are such a pleasure to own! Enjoy :)

Wow! Thanks for so much feedback! I didn't realize that Eddie (the dark roo) has a side sprig. Zuri definitely does, now I'll need to go inspect Eddie more closely.

Iluna is definitely odd-looking. I've never seen a hen of any breed shaped like her!

I am so glad you think that Zuri, the lighter roo, has a "look" that could spell aggression if he were head roo. I only say that because I was beginning to have doubts that I am doing the right thing. We really like Eddie, and I would choose him if I had to select one rooster, but he picks on Zuri, sometimes ruthlessly, and I feel bad for Zuri. I tend to root for the underdog, so I was feeling like I should give poor Zuri a chance. Zuri was always bigger than Eddie, but Eddie is filling out now. Zuri is taller, with the nice bloomers, that Maggiesdad pointed out :D . They are from the same hatch. Eddie did run at me once. I'm hoping it doesn't happen again.

I am glad that you would breed with Eddie, despite his dark color, because that is likely what I will do. Right now, he is the only one who mates with anyone, as he will pummel Zuri if he makes an attempt! I'm not sure how long these two roosters can coexist, -I've never tried to keep two before.

I appreciate everyone's feedback! Saving up my old coffee creamers, just in case. ;)

i have no idea about correct coloring, being very new to all this, but Iluna's just plain *gorgeous*.

Does she always hold her tail that way? I remember someone have a pullet that had a 'strange' shape.
It is so great seeing all the variety we get. I know there is only one standard for these, but I like the differences, kind of like the swedish flower birds. They have lots of accepted colors.

When I looked at the pic On my IPad,!, I don't see a don't see a side sprig on your grey roo. I often look at the forums on my phone, so no, I don't think he has one. He is lead roo for a reason. Use him.

Sometimes birds hatch with or develop spinal or pelvic irregularities that give them an uneven or hunched appearence. There is no way of telling if these are congenital (accidents of development) our hereditary (able to be passed on genetically) deformities. These birds are best removed from the breeding population to avoid the possibility of passing this on. They can, though, be perfectly acceptable layers and taste just as good as unaffected birds.

I was also thinking that I shouldn't breed her. She is much smaller than the others, and so strangely shaped. I hope she will at least lay some eggs!

And yes, naturespace, she does always hold her tail that way. She reminds me of the lady with the hoop skirt in the Seurat painting, "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" .

Of course, I am an art teacher, so that is the way I look at her :D !

I see. Would not breed her then. I hope she lays well for you.

Today feels like fall for sure. No humidity and not to hot. Just right to chill with the birds and dogs.

It feels like fall her in CA today too. We are heading back up the the mid 90's again this week for our first Indian summer. We usually have several of those that can stretch into October...
