Euthanizing chickens, least violent way?

Maybe the upside down thing is why mine don't move. I usually have them upside down for a couple of minutes while I am getting rid of my son and working up the nerve. Then I just lay it on the stump. I have never had one move around all that much.
 
I think a pretty good way is to hold them by the feet while you lay them onto the ground on their belly. Then lay a broomstick over their neck right behind their head. Step down on the broom stick with both your feet and pull up on the legs. Ive only had to do two birds so far (two roosters which we raised for meat) and used this method with success. If this way works for me im sure it would work well for you too. It seems pretty foolproof but not as gruesome as a knife plus the bird is dead instantly.
