I have some BLRW that are about a few weeks old already and some of them look like they already have SPECTACULAR lacing, some not so much. I am wondering (not getting rid of any just yet, not selling or trying to unload, just wondering) if some experienced BLRW breeders could look at these pics and be able to tell at a glance which ones would most likely mature into the typiest plumage. Any opinions welcome, not just experienced breeders. Please state your experience level in your reply, if you would. Thanks, trying to learn here.

Wow, looks like you have blue black & splash in the group! (am another fan of the BLRWs not alot of experience with them. Had one wonderful splash hen, wish I'd kept her). I have understood from BYC Wyandotte thread that the black look not much different than Gold laced and the black have too much black in the feather and not enough red. Pic#10 with chick facing down appears to have the most defined lacing. Katy in Kansas, a BYCer here would have some pointers.

Beautiful chicks. They look very happy. Several as you stated already have wonderful lacing. 1 or possibly 2 are either very dark blue or the black phase of BLRW from a blue x blue cross. Will be very interested to hear from others with BLRW experience as to when during developement you can accurately start deciding which of your chicks are keepers.

I have no experience, but my sister and I have 6 of this breed in the bator and 6 more under her bloody NHR. Yours look good to me. I like the lacing on the 1st and 3rd pic. The darker one. Did you breed these your self or buy them?

JamesA is the breeder. They are BIG, soggy, heavy, gentle, calm, friently, happy, fast growing, amiable, beautiful, sweet and did I mention they are friendly? If anyone wants some GOOD CHICKS... order from him! You will not be sorry. I don't knwo about the feathers, but the "people" in the feather suits, they are great!

Just conting down the pictures 1 is going to be dark blue, 3 is dark blue, 6 is dark blue, 7and 8 maybe a black and I,ve never hatched a black here and honestly even coming from my birds.I don't like the lacing on 7 and 8 yet but it will probably improve in time as the lacing takes time to develop..Most of them appear to have very nice lacing.I think your going to have some keepers in that bunch. It sure looks like they are happy in there home. They couldn't have a better momma taking care of them

Thanks James! What about that black comb on 7/8 (same bird) does that black comb mean it is a girl?

As far as getting black, I am THRILLED to have that nicely laced black boy to cross on splash girls. Got a nice marked roo of every variety, which completely covers my bases, breeding wise. I could not be happier with this little flock. They, on the other hand, were not so happy about the photo studio accomodations, (parakeet cage on the side patio) on a windy sunny morning! That explains a little bit of the stinkeyes going on there...

Lacing changes so much before a bird matures that it's often hard to pick the best out early.
