Evaluating Dog Food

Living on a fixed income doesn't leave me much of a choice since I have4 dogs to feed, I buy 100 lbs a month and Iusually buy kibbles and bits, My Dane has a very sensitive stomach and she likes the kibbles and bits or chunks, i usually rotate one month bits next chunks, whichever i usually give them a splash of oil for their hair. marrie

So I read the whole thread and found the intial "test" to be interesting but nowhere in the thread did I find where the values for each question came from. Who created the test and was it based on science/psuedoscience /slanted science/ agenda science or was it created by those who put Salmon and Buffalo and peas and carrots in thier dog food?? So does anyone know where they came from. Salmon must be much better for my hounds than what I'm feeding them. Heck I can't even afford to eat Salmon regularly. Right now I'm feeding several fox hounds Sportmix at 3 cups a day. The housedog- a beagle mix gets a cup give or take based on how hungry she is. I clean up a single poop a day per dog. Did the same with Purina Hi-pro daily only fed about 20 percent more per dog. The beagle has made it to the ripe old age of 18.5 maybe she'd live forever if I fed her better qaulity. It is interesting to see how "Shocked" people are over how "poor" thier dog food is based on an on-line questionaire. Feed what you can afford without feeling guilty. Keystonepaul.

I feed Canidae, LOVE IT! My mom feeds INOVA, LOVE IT!

Check out the Whole Dog Journal they put out a best and worst list every year. Basically if you can buy it at a grocery store it is junk and if it comes from a Petsmart or Petco or any other super large chain there are superior foods on the market for your dog.

I do what works for me regardless of what "others" say unless I can find primary reviewed docs on it. The value system felt one sided. I don't have a dog though. :p

She doesn't claim any science behind the creation of the questions. just a way to help people choose and "weed out" dog foods based on their ingredients.

For anyone who can't find a decent food in your area. Go to the food companies website and:
1) check their list of dealers there may be an independent one in your area
2) look for online dealers that will ship, most charge shipping, but some will waive it if you buy over a certain dollar amount, or they might be having a free shipping sale. If they charge shipping look for the dealer closet to your location.
Some websites:
www.k9cusine.com (Free shipping over $50)
Flint River Ranch (don't know the website, just google it) shipping is included in the price of the food.
3) Check with friends and neighbors and see if you can order a LARGE amount directly from the company (ie. become your own dealer)

Yes! A thread resurrection. This should be a STICKY!!

For all those threads that are now asking about dog food, this is for you!
