Ever feel lonely when you dont have any PM's waiting for you?

OMG I don’t know which way to turn or what to do.

I have 1 pullet, 1 cockerel, 1 hen and 1 cock at a show. This morning when I dropped them off, there was no vet check as advertized in the procedure manual for this show. People were just driving up and putting their birds in cages marked with their name. The Woman in Charge (WIC), when she finally returned, told me it’s OK because she knows who most people are. I asked if she wanted to check my birds since she had never met me before and she said no. I was informed that I would have to be there to feed & water them twice a day myself as no one will even water them. The “dishes” are too high for my birds and are plastic human drinking cups held there by clips above my birds’ head. Of course they spilled them as soon as they tried to drink or eat from them so off to the store I went to get my own cups for their cages. I wasn’t going to allow them to be there in what was expected to be 90 degree heat without water!!!

So when I come back this afternoon, the Woman in Charge (WIC) is not there but the 4-H showing has already finished. I see a white “Ameraucana” has a blue ribbon on it. Lovely white bird with puffy cheeks, willow legs and a single high comb. I also see that my birds have the classification of “American Breed” not AOB as they should have been.

Earlier, WIC told me they she had hired the best judge – the vice president of the American Poultry Association. Well I am impressed. But now I am confused. So I ask her why the judge gave a blue ribbon to the previously described white EE. I told her I knew that it was an EE and she asked me how. I told her. She told me “Well it’s 4H and we give them latitude. If we didn’t they would never show again and get discouraged.” I said how could the judge give any ribbon to an EE? She asked me to look in my SOP and I told her it would not be in an SOP as EEs are not there. She told me of course they are not there – I’m glad you know this. DUH? I think at this point she was trying to double talk me. She said the bird was judged by the SOP again and I told her that it was an EE. She said well what’s an EE but an Ameraucana that is not quite perfect. I finally said the word to her….”an EE is a MUTT bird and cannot be shown as a purebred”. To which she said an EE is perfectly OK to enter as an Ameruacana , go buy a current copy of the SOP.” I gave up on that point

I ask the WIC to correctly categorize my birds. She can’t. I said well I don’t know why I am here. The judge can’t tell the difference between and EE and an Ameraucana” She said the judge is the best and “he is the Vice President of the American Poultry Association and knows what he is doing”

I say well my birds are incorrectly categorized and cannot compete in the category they are in and the judge will rule against my birds anyway so I should probably take them home now before they have more of a possibility of contracting something” She tells me that if I pull my birds now, that I will be barred for life from any further competition ever sponsored with the American Poultry Association.

What The Heck Have I Gotten Myself Into??????

What do you advise?

Gosh, I have never shown birds, so I don't know what to tell you. It does sound screwed up to say the least! Can you maybe talk to the judges or anyone higher up?

I guess we can just call him Tray.

ETA: Michelle - Maybe she told the doc she wants to be induced? I was BEGGING to be induced, but mine wouldn't let me until 39.5 weeks...I think 39 wks is the standard unless there's a medical issue.

Traygen is better than some of the other names she had picked out though! They call him T-Man a lot too. Kelly you are probably right about her asking about inducing. First, it was at 39 weeks, then she said he mentioned c-section because "the baby will be too big" at 9 lbs.

Two weeks ago he told her any time after 3 weeks and he will let her go. This time it is the "we will keep you on the 13th if you are dilated at all." I would love to be in the room to see what he is actually telling her and what she is asking. It drives me crazy! What can't a person just have a baby naturally if there aren't any problems? He will come when he is darned good and ready!

Remember Michell she is a VERY YOUNG newbie mom and is probaby scared out of her mind..that being said.. SHE NEEDS TO SUCK IT UP AND TELL HER DOC SHE'S LETTING NATURE TAKE ITS COURSE! If she is supposedly at 9lbs already I can see induction by week 39. But ...they told me I was having a large baby 9+ lbs and induced me at 37 +weeks thinking she was going to be huge. She was a tiny chicken! skin and bones at 6 lbs! Broke my heart as she needed to stay cooking for at least another two weeks!!!!

Paradise, I don't anything about showing chickens, only cattle. But it sounds to me like you need to talk to someone other than WIC. Red flag, she had no idea who you were and she let you bring your birds in -- how many other birds are there that she had no idea who the owners were even though she said she knew everyone.

Have you started a thread about this?

Michelle, hope you are okay with us having fun with ducky's name. We don't mean any harm -- promise. I have never had a baby so I can't offer any input except that unless there is trouble leave it be. if it ain't broke don't fix it.....

beach is looking better every second. we leave at 2 and will be there by 4:30. so ready. Irene has made her way up the cost so it's looking like our weather will be much better. i hate it for the northern coastal states. I hope she changes courses and returns to sea.

bye for now will check in later.

Yep I did - on the Ameruacana thread. I got conflicting reponses but the most poiniant was from CA who reminded me it's not worth arguing with my husband/best friend over this since he belives I am out of line. He's most important in my life and if he can't join me in it then I will just go to raising EEs ( which are prettier because of their variations in my opnion) or jsut slaughter them all for food.

It really did mean a lot to me but not worth the heartache or trouble at home. I can give it up - I have been given so many other gifts in my life - I don't need to have it all.
I love my husband very much

Why would you slaughter your birds? They're YOUR birds, whether or not they're winning any shows. If you're not going to show then who cares what breed they are. The show circuit IS very lenient on 4-H/FFA entries b/c they don't want to upset the kids. I won't argue right or wrong, but if you want to truly be judged on SOP then enter them in a "real" show that doesn't include kiddies. They're much stricter and will disqualify the birds that don't fit the standard. JMHO.

Michelle - I have to say I feel for Lindsey (SP?) being pregnant this time of year. I would have let them induce me earlier than they did if my doc would have gone for it. As it was I basically told him he'd better induce me at 39.5 weeks or I was inducing myself with doggie drugs.

I was absolutely MISERABLE in this heat, couldn't be outside for more than 5 minutes without feeling like I was going to pass out, plus my maternity leave was scheduled to start that weekend whether or not I had the baby! (This was my doing b/c we had to schedule a relief doctor). I only took 5 weeks off, so if I'd carried 2 more weeks I would have only had 3 weeks at home with Wyatt instead of 5.

Robin--I hope you are enjoying the beach! (insert jealous smiley here) And no, I don't mind at all making fun of Traygen's name. I guarantee you it isn't any worse than we say! After she made the comment about maybe changing his name and not telling anyone until after he is born, I started calling him Ducky and it has stuck. It drives her crazy, but, it doesn't stop me from doing it anyway.

Kelly--I completely understand Lindsie being miserable carrying a baby this time of year also. I had Colton in September. Completely natural. I am not trying to start an argument with you, but I just think the doctors have too much control over what nature used to.

No arguments here-the last month of pregnancy sucks rocks! Both my docs wanted to induce me because it was Thanksgiving weekend

because they were the doctors, I followed orders and regretted it when i saw how tiny my last DD was:(

That is exactly what I am talking about. No medical reason, just handy for the docs. And as a patient, you would think they would guide you in the right direction. I am trying to keep my mouth shut and see what happens, but it is hard...
