Morning peeps...
Mr Hawk came a'visitin' again yesterday.
We were burning leaves in the front yard, when I hear the chickens alarm and saw them run for cover.. I ran to the back, looked around, didn't see anything ... it was still.. quiet.
i continued to walk toward the coop and spotted movement. Mr hawk! And he was carrying something .. it was Sparkle... one of my MF d'uccle hens. He couldn't get off the ground with her. I took off running toward him .. he tried to take off with her again .. he landed again, trying to get a better grip.
Finally he dropped her and flew up to a tree, did a nice tail shake, and watched me go to her.
I thought she was dead.. lying where he dropped her, with her head twisted underneath her. I picked her up, head dangling, and noticed she was breathing. Cradling her, I walked up to the coop to check on everyone else. I really was thinking that every breath was going to be her last.
Mr Hawk dropped down to where he dropped her to investigate.. then flew back up to his 'perch' and watched me.
As I walked to the front to discuss options with DH, she was able to right her head. I talked to her and she made a few noises and eventually opened one of her eyes.. We examined her and found only one puncture wound on her back .. bleeding pretty good.
I carried her around for a while, until she started moving and acted like she could sit on her own, then I placed her in a nest box in the banty cage .. and this is where she stayed. When I put the other hens up that evening, they went to her, very warily .. and reconnected.
This morning she was at the feeder eating .. so I guess she'll be ok.
Mr Hawk hung around all afternoon .. just far enough away that we couldn't have a proper conversation with him about not coming back.
Part of me is relieved that he was unable to get her off the ground, because that means that as long as I'm vigilant, he might hurt, but won't GET another one.
The other part of me is thinking that I need to fence off a half acre of chicken specific land, and get great pyrenese... LOL.
Poor little girl .. and all the rest... they were all so traumatized all day..
Ok.. that's my hawk story.
