Ever hear of "chick flipping" to determine the sex of chicks? Try this

I love this web site!!!

i dont think it works at all bc...i have 6 chicks and it said 5 of them are roos. I did a "string" test on them twice when they were in their eggs still and it said i had 2 rir hens and 1 rir roo and 2 spw hens and 1 spw roo(4 hens and 2 roos). I got the same results on the same eggs twice. I did it again tonight and I got the same results as when I did it to them when they were in their eggs. The flip test only gave me two that matched up with the string "test." I at least hope mines right.

Our local feed store orders pullets, but for customers who want to be doubly sure that they are NOT getting roos, they (feed store employees) do the magnet swinging thing. They put the chick in a box, hold a magnet suspended by a string over the chick.

If it swings in a circle, it's a hen. If it swings back and forth, it's a roo. I hatched 6 chicks last week. I tried the test myself. According to the magnet test, I have 4 roos and 2 hens.

So, for fun, my DD and I hung the magnets over ourselves and each time, it swung for girl (which we are!

) then we swung it over DS and it swung for boy.

Okay, are there any more "old wive's" or "old chikun' farmer's" tales out there that we can try?

So far we have Chick Flipping - turned over on your hand or on a bedspread. BTW, I tried 2 of mine on a towel & they flipped...out! Never did relax & kept both legs up. On my hand they showed as hens. Do you suppose they are already starting to PMS?

Then we have AJ's - "when the chicks are hatched and all dried out and relaxed, you can run your hand over their heads in a sweeping manner and the hens will duck down while the roos will stand up straighter and stick their heads UP."

Many suggested the string/magnet - as explained by newchickenfamily - They put the chick in a box, hold a magnet suspended by a string over the chick. If it swings in a circle, it's a hen. If it swings back and forth, it's a roo. I hatched 6 chicks last week. I tried the test myself. According to the magnet test, I have 4 roos and 2 hens.

I'm keeping an open mind about all of these chick sexing methods, but one thing I know for sure. NONE of the others have the "cuteness factor" of Chick Flipping.

If we try all these scientific experiments, I wonder if we will qualify as "mad" scientists!

Ok, I just had to try this!

Our results:

Chipmunk-hen
Amy-hen
Smoke-hen
Rocky- hen
Night- Roo
Ebony-?

Now we will just have to wait and see who is who!

My hubby is now trying this and getting completely different results......

I had heard about the something going over the heads and the reactions. I tried this on my chickens when they were little. I tried to surprise them and throw something over there heads and by the time I would look to see they'd have moved in a different position, so I did it several times. By the 4th or 5th time they didn't react very much at all.

Not to get off the subject of flipping chicks, but I also have heard of holding chicks by the head that a roo will fight to get away and a pullet will just go limp...i dunno if that is true but has anyone tried this at all?
