Every freakin' year this happens

Great post. I was wondering how many of you would like to read about my practice program for improving my table tennis game? I have a robot that is more reliable than a practice partner but it doesn't pick up the balls off the floor. I'll try and get some pictures of it to share next time.

But so that you aren't disappointed, here is a picture of some washers I had to replace on my boat trailer electric winch. Pretty challenging.:lau

Not sure what this has to do with the topic

My across the road neighbor was always the one that got hit. The drunks and idiots would overcorrect and bounce out of the bar ditch along our front pasture and hit his mailbox and tear through the hotwire for his bull pasture (thankfully it was a friendly bull). After many mailboxes were killed he changed his setup to a hollow metal bracket/post holder set in concrete and buried to just leave a bit above grade. Then he made 5 or 6 simple mailbox brackets and posts from 4x4s and bought the metal boxes in bulk or for next to nothing at farm sales, etc. That way when some new idiot killed another mailbox he just pulled the broken post out of the metal bracket and slid in a new one to last 3 or 4 months or however long...15 min max and he was done.

Unfortunately we are in a similar situation. Our home is a back road about a mile away from a trailer park and we have our share of drunk drivers. I know at least one neighbor for certain guilty of driving intoxicated because we heard a crash and went to investigate with the first aid kit to help anyone injured. The vehicle was nowhere in site but as we were piecing things together he walked out of his home drunk as a skunk claiming it was his girlfriend's car. We explained that we only wanted to help if anyone was hurt and then went home. From what we've heard he's had his share of problems and we want no involvement in those. Again though, hearsay. We do not know him. I just know that my mailbox is frequently taken out by plows, drunk drivers and ice skids.

My family's poor mailbox got smoked a million times when I was a kid. Can't do much about the drunk drivers and accidents/skids but the solution for the plows was for my old man just to make a pile of ricks (think like basketball sized and up) on each side of the post. It looked like a ridiculous cairn but the important thing was the plow drivers were a lot more reluctant to smash the boulder pile versus the small wooden post.

You can probably find someone nearby on CL or something with some small boulders they want gone.

Plenty of boulders out here, it was a former quarry area. My mail box has so much rock around it to hold it up (please!!!). My house is the last one on a dead end street. Every person loves to fly down the street, discover the road has ended and turns around on my lawn- and aims for the mailbox.

It's funny because growing up I don't remember my dad ever having to replace the mailbox. I remember he bought a new one but thats because it was "pretty". The worst thing that ever happened to it was some prankster filled it entirely with toothpaste

We have a ton of boulders. Our property used to be farmland and we have a very large stack in the front yard. I just want something more full proof. I'm sure there has to be some clever design out there

electric winch.

Seriously though.....

You know how we make automatic doors for the coops?

Cantilever a pole out over where it goes and have a drop down mailbox.
Set the timer for when the mailman comes then have it go back up.

You just gotta make sure no kids hold on to it for a ride!

Looks like you have been targeted.

+1 for game cam. And rifles!

I think that my topic has about the same relevance to Backyard Chickens as your mail box thread does.

I believe that is why the OP posted in the "Random Ramblings" forum. That is where we are allowed to post anything and get feedback on anything from those we have gotten to know and communicate with all the time on chicken issues. So, your post is a bit less relevant. Just sayin'...……
