Last night I went out to coop to check on my 6 week old chickens, got there just in time to see a 5 foot black rat snake attack one them. The chicken got away and all he had was a mouthful of feathers, I caught and relocated him.

This afternoon my two week old babies were enjoying some sun and grass in their outdoor cage. This guy shows up, he got one but couldn't get him out of the cage, he also injured another one. I shot near him to scare him off, he has been back three times in the last hour.

Shooting to scare off the hawk didn't work. He came back and got two more. I had to move them back into the brooder.

Welcome! Keep your birds in a hawk-proof pen for ten to fourteen days, or until your hawk buddy has been gone for a few days. He'll be back soon, but will likely give up if there's no way he can get to your birds. Shooting at raptors is considered harassment, and is illegal, as is actually killing them. Just make your birds unavailable and he'll go away. Mary

Crows will chase away a hawk and don't tend to bother with chickens if you are in a area close to the city you could try to attract them. They don't show up in the country because farmers would shoot at them to keep them away from gardens and they where smart enough to realize people don't tend to fire guns in the city
