Evil Aggressive chicks

Cull.
I don't think debeaking is the answer. Seems like defeating the purpose of breeding for a self defending free ranger.
I wouldn't turn them out to fend for themselves either. I'd separate them as needed, feed a few more weeks and into the freezer.

For a cross that would fare better in the woods being hardy, robust, ability to avoid predators and still not agressive, you might try a roo that's either Blue Andalusian, Fayoumi, Penedesenca, Catalana, Campine or Hamburg. They all fit the bill.

Good luck.

Imho. Cull them now or isolate them until they get big enough to harvest.

I have Silver Sebrights mixed in with my White Rocks. Last year when a hen sent broody on me I gave her some eggs to hatch and some of them were hybrids between the SSs and WRs. Around 10 weeks 2 of the roos were harassing and mounting every hen that they could find. These were the most aggressive chickens that I've ever seen. Another roo wasn't nearly as bad but did end up getting very aggressive to anyone who came close except me. They all went to freezer camp.

Now I did have a SS/WR cross hen that we've kept. We call her Black Betty and she doesn't put up with anything from anyone in the flock. She isn't aggressive but she won't back down. She kind of talks back when we call her and talk to her and has become one of my favorite hens.

But I'd definitely get rid of the troublemakers.

I really regret having crossed them now, didnt know what I was getting into. I thought about putting them in with my adult hens and seeing what goes down, But I dont want to set them out just free, my luck they would live and harrass my calm adult birds. In reality They wouldnt last long with the coons, skunks, possum, hawks and etc....
I think they will end up in the freezer pretty soon even if its mini bird sized, better I eat em than the wildlife. I have two broodies sitting on more eggs full of these monsters. Maybe they can correct them and make them more civil than I did.

IDK I think Im ridding myself of the lot of em and going back to Silkies!!

bakerjw, that's wonderful. Sometimes there's just nothing else to do with a nasty bird, though.

wow! The images going through my head while reading this thread are bordering on old Frankenstein movies and wild mistakes while in the science lab. I personally, wouldn't want those genes replicated, in the wild or otherwise. I hear chicken Frickesie is pretty good.

Whenever the better half and I come across this small farm of tiny goats..we ooohhhed and aaawwedd..then they would all be gone..right before passover and we would tell ourselves they all went to camp too. lol

I put the largest seven outside, in a small pen, with a 7yo Silkie Roo that has helped raise many a silkie chick. He wont kill them but will put them in their place and wont allow any fighting. I have never put any this young out without a hen. They have a small house and a pallet on bricks for sky danger cover.
I figure he can babysit for a good six - eight weeks untill they get fryer sized.
IDK what else to do at this point. I think the smaller ones are hens and they are very happy to have the others gone from the brooder.

So Camp Freeze a lot for them very very soon!

Curious, how did they act when you put them in the pen with the rooster? Not knowing much about chicken disposition, can they be rehabilitated, does their temprament ever change? Because of their mean temprements, is there a position or job on the farm that is suitable for them. Danger alarms or watch chickens? Just curious.

if your rooster can straighten them out then there wont be a need to cull them will there? I mean, it was your mistake for breeding the little devils and it's not their fault their parents weren't a good match, I know you just wanted hardier birds but don't you think you should have researched it more?
