Cool story!! - I'm from Washington and have RIR's also... Mine are 20weeks, expect laying any day! This could be silly but I noticed you are using the Storey book as a reference as well as BYC, same as me - The Storey book is good less one part so I thought I'd share: In they layer management chapter it says to start adding oats to your grower feed until you reach a 50/50 mix to ensure that pullets dont grow to fast/lay to soon.... DONT do this! I did and they would only eat the oats, flinging (and wasting) all of the grower feed out of feeder to get to it. When I consulted BYC, a wise BYCer told me this is like mixing candy in with vegatables for your child and wondering why they are digging past the veggies to only the candy! Hahaha, so true... Oats are a treat! Just thought I'd spare you in case you're taking everything in that book to heart!! GOOD LUCK!

And just where the heck were you two years ago with that advice?

My girls are now addicted to wheat! And lettuce, and turnip tops, spinach, chard, beat tops......You name it...Just about everything other than what I actually buy as their staple diet! Spoiled rotten birds!!

Thanks for the heads-up. I have discovered a few things in the book that are not necessarily supported by BYCers or the folks at the feed store. I got the same answer you did when I asked about scratch. It's candy and the chooks will soon want it over the ration they should be eating.
