So, we collect eggs every day, and multiple times on weekends. I know (hopefully) all the secret places they lay, and SO FAR, we havent discovered any new nests with questionable egg age, nothing sits even overnight. So, my question is this... how long does it take for a fertile egg to get bloody and have development about the size of a pencil eraser in it? Because that is what I found in an egg yesterday as I was making Egg Bake.... but if I am collecting eggs every day and havent found any eggs with a questionable age, how could it be partially developed? DH asked if its possible that it was in the hen too long and started developing before she laid it?

No worries. That was just a blood spot, gross to be sure, but nothing to do with a developoing chick.

ETA: One of my Australorps had a huge blood spot in her first egg, it's just a glitch in the system where there is a minor internal rupture that gets encased in the egg. I watched her lay the egg, collected it, and brought it in to cook it. No way did it have anything to do with a developing chick, but there was quite a bit of blood (not just a little spot) so I fed it to the dog--she'll eat anything.

Probably a meat spot, which is different from a blood spot. A meat spot is actually a piece of the repro. tract that sloughs off during the formation of an egg.

LOL, lucky for DH and his work buddies (who the egg bake was for) I was cracking each egg into a bowl first and then adding to the mixing bowl!

If I remember correctly I read somewhere that it takes about 3 days of incubation for the blood pool to start. I could be wrong. As they say the memory is the second thing to go.
