My chickens wear leg bands, it helps me identify the old ones, (wearing red) and younger ones (wearing red) and the littlest, (Wearing blue). Well today I went out and saw one of my older red wearing, RIR chicken. Except her leg has grown around the leg band!!!! I think maybe she has some disease that makes her leg grow out (even though she is old and stopped growing) or something. I will post pics in a few. PLEASE help ASAP this is nasty!!!! If i try cutting it off then there will be a hole or something from where it came out. WHAT DO I DO????

Just throwing out another idea, It could also be swelling from a bad case of Bumblefoot. Agree with the above poster need to remove it, clean it and treat it.. You could also wrap it with Vetwrap to keep it clean between treatments.

I had that problem a few years back with some chicks that I was hatching/raising for someone else. I used the plastic leg bands that were supposed to expand as the chicks grew. Needless to say, they didn't expand. Thank goodness I caught them before their legs had grown completely around it, but as it was I had to pull the bands out of their flesh. I felt horrible that I let it happen to begin with, and I'll never use them again. Anyway, I treated the wounds with Neosporin and in all cases they healed quickly.

Cut the band off ASAP!

Treat for mites with something like this FlyRID® Plus Spray and treat the roosts and poultry barns. Mites like dark corners so don't miss any and spray until it drips off the roosts, the wood will absorb some and keep the little critters off.

Good luck!

I also use the Durvet Dairy bomb, but it will fog the entire area so hold your breath.

She has a bad case of scaly leg mite. If possible, cut off the band immediately. Then coat both legs in vaseline or oil to smother the mites. I'd also consider soaking the legs in warm water to remove lose scales, dead mites, and dirt in order to speed up the healing.

She definitely has daily legs not good for her treat immediately! If you need more information there is a lot about it online!

You need to cut the band, then take some pliers or tweezers and try to pull the ends out of the skin. Try not to leave any in the skin. Be prepared to put pressure on the bleeding, and try some blood stop powder or flour if needed. There could be some infection from the foriegn body, so you may need to clean it out with weak betadine or soap and water, and apply some neosporin onitment or BluKote.

Thanks everyone, it is night time here so I will do it in the morning. I am concerned about how to cut it off without hurting her leg, scissors wont work nor a knife, as the material that this is ,made of is extremely tough. An acquaintance of mine have snips that they think would work good.
