I had 6 ex-battery hens at the weekend and one of them has a bent nail and tip of her toe which is bent under the rest of her toe. She walks around but with abit of a limp but does not seem to be in pain. I have looked into what it could be but i cannot find anything which is like this. I know that ex-bats can have these problems and just learned to cope over time and that she could of had the problem all her life. Can anyone help me with this please.

Sorry I don't know what to do for her but wanted to 'bump' your post up a bit

Welcome to BYC and thanks for taking in some poor battery hens. Good luck!!

could you make a splint for the toe to keep it straight? (with a icelolly stick or matchsticks splinting the toe straight, then wrapped up in a bandage to keep it in place? maybe it would straighten out over time?

I have checked her out and the nail is missing from that toe and she does not seem to be limping anymore. Is it common for a nail to be missing?

yes, i have a few chickens who've lost a nail. i also have a few ex battery who are missing a whole toe, but it doesnt seem to bother them

How do they loose a nail? Would it just get caught in the cage? I can now only presume that the limp was due to a strain or sprain as they were not used to being able to walk around.
