Ok, I teased you about sharing, but now that I think about it, I have no idea how to share something like this other than directly by email. For school I can upload Microsoft documents and people can open them, but on the net I am not so sure! Great spreadsheet idea though. I did a "quick" mental calculations and I believe I will have to charge $5 per egg for 10 months to break even....

When I started putting this sheet together, I was wondering which hens were laying how much. (That is why I have the average egg per week at the top.) Then I got into it and added in the price stuff, not that I ever thought I would break even or anything, I was just curious.

I got it up on my blog. It is at the right side of the page, and anyone can download it for free. I made it through December. Hopefully I will get some suggestions and put one up for next year also.

Please let me know what I can do to make it better.

I have to laugh - when hubby and I started out on our bee adventure we added up all the costs for initial startup for the two hives we had in the backyard - we ended up with 58 lbs, which is pretty good for the first year, but it cost $66.20 a lb!

The only thing I can think of to add for anyone new is the initial cost of the chicks and then, if you really want to push it, the cost of the new coop and run you had to build, along with the furnishings. Then your eggs will end up being about the same ($66.20) a dozen!

Or maybe we don't need to think about it

Don't even need to think about it! I had not even begun to think abou the cost of the coop, DH made those purchases. I think it should be limited to the things that I bought only! LOL <hiding and in disguise>

Considering how much my new coop and runs is costing, it will be 20 years worth of eggs before the chickens make a dent in the debt.

But it's worth it. Thank you for sharing the spreadsheet. I'm going to dink around with it a little when I'm not so tired and can think straight... I think I might be on the verge of too many birds... is that possible?
