Excellent bulk mealworm source...

Ok, pushing in prolapses is gross, but an immidate necessity so you don't have time to think too much about it. Shoveling chicken poop isn't too bad because I'm at shovel length, and I've never processed a chicken. There's a place here that does the dirty work for you.

Actually, if the meal worms didn't take so long, I'd probably do it. But it's too much like incubating eggs and not getting fuzzy butts at the end, just gross bugs.

RE: raising crickets... thanks, Future Cricket Man. That guys setup is simpler than the others I saw. I'll see if Olivia is up to the project. She has a LOT of other projects going on right now though (tough middle school homework, writing songs and learning electric guitar, babysitting class, chicken and cat and gecko care, etc) though, so I don't want to overwhelm her too much!
Thanks again

LOL - yeah, the reward not quite as nice as a fuzzy little chick. I'll have to admit I'm a little afraid of bugs so I'd be shooing them away when I'd go digging for worms(for some reason I'm ok with worms). It's fun to watch them metamorphis into bugs though.

I got my 500 medium mealworms today!

They're VERY small though - I can see my girls munching through these in no time FLAT - they look to be under an inch long and very skinny - so I'd go for LARGE next time. (which might be real soon!)

I just stopped by my local Pet store today and asked about quantities etc. and WOW!!! They were expensive! They can go up to a 10,000 bag of mediums but they want $49.99 for that! OUCH! I may just try cultivating my own. We will see. It seems wrong to charge so much for worms!

Wild, if you put them in wheat bran or oatmeal and put carrots or potatoe wedges in there you will have large ones in a few days. Make sure you use a plactic container and dont put the lid on tight. If you do it will mold. The different sizes are just the different stages of developement. They are all the same worms. When I grow them I used plain oatmeal and put potatoe pealing on the top, 2 or 3 and when those dry out put in new ones. The beatles dont fly so you are fine there too. Jenn
