We just moved to an old farm in Logan, Ohio and the barn has a solid 2 feet of horse crap on the stall portion. I want to know if I should remove it, let it be, or use some other solution. Some of it is wet from rain and snow blowing in. I also dont own any heavy machinery to scoop it out, only a shovel and the bed of a Ranger. I know this isnt directly related to chickens, but I this seems by far the best forum on line I have found for people pretending to be farmers like me. :)

Welcome aboard.
I'd bet you could post an ad on your local Craigslist offering free horse poop to anyone who wants to come shovel some up their self.

I personally wouldn't want the two feet of poop to just stay there.

You could move some to your garden too.

Is the floor concrete, dirt, wood? The longer the poo stays, the more wood will rot. But @KikisGirls has an awesome idea about advertising it on CL.

Welcome to the group.... Get some chickens and stick around! Or... Wish for chickens, and stick around! LOL

The floor is dirt, and I dug some out an about 5 foot by 5 foot square, and it looks as if the previous owners never cleaned it out in their lifetime of living on this farm! I do plan on getting chickens this spring, and it will be my first time. I am very excited!

I understand!

Chickens are a lot of fun, therapeutic, and the spoils... aka the eggs... are awesome. I'm really enjoying my girls, who are all under a year still.

Do lots of research on here, lots of people have enclosed and converted stalls into coops. There's so much information and informed people... we won't lead you astray. But we will enable. LOL

Yes, I am really looking forward to having them. This website has been a great source for information and guidance. I assume I will be using it a lot once I get my chicks!

If a shovel doesn't fit your hand very well, & you have the room, your best bet would probably be to hire a local guy & his Bobcat, or to rent one & operate it yourself. I wouldn't waste the manure, though, not when you can sell it to suburbanites for their gardens.
