So this is my first time doing this and I am so super dooper excited but also super crazy scared.
Here is what we are doing this year.
I oderd 25 red broilers from Privett Hatchery. These arrived to my excitement as promised on 4/30/2014.
Sadly, 2/25 had passed prior to arrival. Another passed the first night despite my efforts of trying to revive him/her with raw egg (info found on this site) and one more the next day. Not a good start!!!
Since then, the remainder seems to be doing well.
In addition to the meat birds, we ordered 6 layers from a local feed store.
Unfortunately they did not deliver what I had requested =(. Originally I was asked for 2 Buff Orphingtons, 2 Barred Rocks and 2 Amaracuanas.
Instead I got 3 Amarucanas, 1 Buff Orphington and 2 Production Reds. Oh well, I'll love them all the same but was really hoping for a more colorful flock.

So they are in the brooder now and my husband is build the chicken tractors for once they are able to go outside. We still need to decide on buying vs building a coop (I want to build he wants to buy...)

I have been reading like a champ here and am super happy I found this site with all the useful information.

Looking forward to being a good "New Member" =). Thank you for all articles and pictures.

First Day with just the meat birds.

Welcome to BYC!

I am sorry about your order and the loss of the chicks! Privett is a very nice hatchery to deal with. I am sure you could call them and they will replace your birds proper. Either way, you have a nice group of birds!

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new the chicks, if chicken math takes over like it usually does, you will wind up buying more chickens, so maybe then you can get the breeds you wanted. Sorry about the meat birds you lost as chicks, always hard to lose the babies. You might like to check out the Meat Bird forum, lots of threads on raising and processing them etc. https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/21/meat-birds-etc
With the coop, you can almost always build a much better one than you can buy for the same price, you might want to check out your state thread to see if people in your area have any suggestions on where to get coops or what kind to build, https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread and be sure to check out the BYC Coops forum for ideas www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coop_Designs
You might like to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping you might find helpful. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Thanks for all the kind words and welcomes. The chickies are all doing great. My daughter just names 3/6 layers the morning.
Our Buff Orphington is now named Emma, one of the Amaracuanas is named Buffy and another is names Olivia. =) She is still thinking of names for the others.

Thanks for the links also!!! Very helpful.

Like many others, I have been scouring these threads for months lhat ong before I ordered the chicks but thought I should contribute =).

Many updates too come!!!

Thanks BYC!
