Hi guys! I am very excited be here and to be apart of this group and I had a quick question, I have two new chicks and when I bout them at my feed store they were pretty active but they seem pretty slow and quiet in there new home, could he just because it's their new home and they just need some time? (Ps: one keeps on sitting on another?)

Hello and welcome! Are they warm enough? They need constant heat for the first 4-6 weeks! Should be about 95 the first week and then lowed 5 degrees each week. How about food and water? Are they getting enough clean water? Also they can be adjusting to their new home.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, someone is always willing to lend an hand!
Also if you need anything or have questions about your new ones this thread is really good, https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-raise-baby

Sounds like they are cold. Do you have a heat lamp? If you do, it may be too high up.

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, sounds like they are cold. Get them under some heat from a lamp. 90 to 95 degrees the first week, lowered by 5 degrees each week for 5 or 6 weeks. Lay down paper towels and sprinkle food all around the feeder area for a few days til they figure out where the food is. Dip everybody's beaks in the water so they know where that is too.

Here is a nice article on raising your new chicks for the first couple months....

Keep us posted on their condition. :-)

Please make yourself at home and we are here to help. X4 that they are cold. Like Two Crows^ said put a heat lamp over them. Start it at 95 degrees and decrease it by 5 degrees each week so that when they reach about a month, it can be removed. Use paper towels; not bedding yet so they don't confuse it with food. Also, don't use newspapers as this damages their growing legs. If you want, you can put some organic, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar in the water to boost their immunity. Also, check for pasty butt.

Again, welcome to the community!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good advice and links above, good luck with your chicks.

Make sure there is an area in the brooder that is away from the lamp, so they can get cooler if need be. Please let us know if they perk up once they are warm. Also if they are eating well .
