Hey everyone!
I've been poking around this site quite a bit and finally decided to join! As the title states I'm the proud new mommy of 10 babies who arrived at my doorstep just over a week ago! My husband and I recently purchased a 6.5 acre property in eastern NC and these little babies are our first step toward our homesteading life goals. Originally from Philadelphia farm life is foreign to me but being an avid animal lover I felt backyard chickens were the way to go. The previous owners of the property had children and left behind a swingset/playhouse combo and while children may be in our future it won't be anytime soon. So we decided to turn the playset into our coop! I'm still finishing up a few things but once it is completed I plan to post some pictures! It is so adorable and I plan to replace the child swings with chicken swings eventually.
I recently discovered a new found appreciation for chicken photography. My co-workers knew about my plans for the chicks and wanted to see them but oh man is it hard to get them to sit still! Unless of course they decide out of the blue they are exhausted and fall asleep right there mid-snack! (See image below from the day the babies arrived). But today I decided to join and introduce myself and attempted to get a picture of some of my babies to show off and they were having none of that!
Anywhoo I ordered the chickies from mypetchicken.com and went with the brown-laying variety so I don't know exactly which breeds I have. I did include a note to mix in white/other colored layers if possible. From the babies I think I've got 4 RI Reds (or some red-variety), 2 Easter Eggers, 2 Gold laced wyandotte, 1 Australorp, and 1 white... something. The last one is a real shy fuzzly lil yellow chickie. I feel like she can turn out to be a number of different breeds but I do see white feathers coming in now that shes a bit over a week old. I've started to name some based off their appearance as I began to be able to differentiate them which has resulted in some adorable names.. Dot, Cheeky, Vee... and some unfortunate "nicknames" ie. Fuzzlebutt, my only chick now at 1 week and 3 days that hasn't begun to grow her tail feathers in yet. You can see almost all of them in the picture below with little Fuzzlebutt off to the left with her bare bum!
Hopefully she inspires me to give her a better name as she grows up.
I'm excited to be a new mama Hen and to be part of this great community! Keep an eye out for some playhouse renovation pictures coming soon!
