I have lurked long enough and gleaned an incredible amount of info from y'all, so I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is bren and I'm about to be a first time chicken owner. I have wanted them for years and decided no more waiting. This Is The Year We Get Chickens. So my partner and I have been working on building our coop for the past couple months. He's in construction and we're both pretty handy and like to collect random building materials, so we're trying to do it with what we have and not have to buy too much. We are SOOOO close to being done (all the rain this spring has really held us up), and should be ready for chickens in the next couple weeks.

We live in the beautiful Driftless Region of SW Wisconsin. We live in a small town and are looking to keep about 5 chickens and incorporate them into our organic permaculture-style yard/garden. We also currently have 6 cats. We are DIYers who sew, knit, build, grow, cook, bake, preserve, and are trying to live as sustainably as we can.

I have been doing so much reading and research about chickens, I'm literally dreaming about them at night. I'm excited and a little terrified. And I'm sure I'll have a ton more questions once I get them. I am so incredibly thankful this BYC community exists, so I don't feel quite so alone or lost.

! Great to have you aboard! Lots of folks are changing their lifestyles to one of greater sustainability. Glad chickens will be part of that for you. Good luck and have fun!!

A peaceful bean is much better than an angry bean.

But once you become "one of us" you're never alone
in the chicken world again.
