hello, my husband and I have just sent a letter to our municipal government asking for an exemption to the by law in place preventing us from having backyard chickens, we are anticipating our letter to be addressed in one months time and expect to have our exemption approved !! So in anticipation of our successful exemption we are starting to look at different designs for chicken coups. We have decided to build our own coop and would love to hear any and all advice. some Must haves would include, 1. easy clean up! 2, shared home for bunnies or goat 3.room for 8 chickens, 4. a system that allows us to be gone for the weekend and nootbe worried(if that's even possible ) :) we are soooooo looking forward to this !!!

I am new to this also. What kind of chickens have y'all thought about getting? I have literally spent my whole day researching the different breeds and really anything on chickens I could find. My fiancé and I are also going to build our own and I am very excited!!

Hi and :welcome

That's very exciting. Good luck with the exemption.
As for the coop, I don't have much experience there but I'll post what I know.
You can get automatic waterers and feeders which dispense stuff as it's eaten up, so you could get by on one of those for a while, as long as wild birds can't get into the coop! There's a page here showing some homemade ones, but you can buy them too.

It's recommended you have 4 square feet per bird, or 10 if they will be in the coop full time (no free ranging).
I'm not too sure about cleaning because our chooks free range and they don't spend much time in the coop, but I think wood chips/shavings absorb moisture well and they're easy to sweep out.

Good luck and enjoy your journey!
