Hi all,
I thought I'd introduce myself. I live in NH. I raised my children on a farm with lots of animals, horses, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks etc... as they grew up and moved on I did also. I love my new home but it's not a farm! I still have horses but my sons keeps them. Of all the things I loved about my farm the biggest void in my life has been my chickens. So this past summer we got a nice coop and set up some nice quarters and yard for some new ladies. I have been so happy having chickens again. They are so interesting, fun to feed, relaxing and I cherish the yummy eggs as compared to the nasty store bought ones I've eaten over the past 6 years! I have an Americauna, a Bielefelder x Delaware, 3 silkies, Orpington and a Millie Fleur Cochin bantam. I recently lost a big beautiful Lemon Cuckoo Orpington who was only about 6 months old. She has been missing since we had a bear attack on Halloween. Yes... on Halloween!! I'm so upset about it. She was such a sweet girl. That is what led me to this site. I was searching for infomatiin on bears killing chickens. I had seen this site before but never had the time to see what a great resource and friendly group it is. I'm a real chicken lover so I think I've found the right place.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home! I'm sorry to hear about the bear attack, it must have been scary. I want a Millie Fleur Cochin bantam so badly, they are adorable! Could you possibly share some pictures of her? :fl
She is so beautiful and sweet!!! She's the one I'm worried about right now. She hasn't come out of her box much since the attack and her chest is bald.

She may be broody. They pluck their feethers on their chest when they are broody and puff up alot too.

Please check out the predator threads for advice. Actually nothing will keep bears away if they want something bad enough. They tear car doors off because they smell an empty candy wrapper. Some people find electrical fencing works but, it would take quite a jolt to get their attention. They are insulated by thick fur. Their nose is not, some folks set things up with some attractive bait like peanut butter smeared on tin foil and affixed to fence (when power is off) or use strip of bacon in the same way.

When they poke their nose into it they get the full jolt. However may not be possible in your area and it would be a danger to humans, pets as well. One lady used to toss lighted firecrackers at them. After a time or two, if bears saw her coming out of the house, they ran off.
