Excuse me - horny hen?

Sadly, I can't have a rooster, maybe I can rent one....lol.

Yep, I've been giving her a pat, a squeeze, and a wiggle to keep her from under my feet. Thanks for making me feel less awkward about it!!!!

Thanks GC Raptor! She is the first production red I've had. Didn't know they layer for such a short time. Guess it into the pot for her.

I swear ObLiDa has an insatiable crush on me. She not only squats for me, she follows me around whenever I am in the pen, she anxiously squeezes through the opening gate as I enter, 'assumes the position' at my feet and will stay there until I pet her. And she did this even when I had a rooster that was actively 'servicing' her!

I have a hen who has recently stopped laying and seems to be *ahem* horny. Every time I go to the coop she comes up to me, turns around, squats down, spreads her wings, and sticks her butt up in the air. Is there anything I can or should do to help her past this? Once she is, will she start laying again? She is a production red and is only about three years old
Hahaha!! Am surprised that a hen that is not laying would do that.

Had a good laugh with this thread.

Yes, I've pulled the tail of a few squatters in my time to get them to mosey onward and out of my feet. Thankfully, I have a rooster who does the job now.

Back to the original poster's comment...you have a Production Red who is 3 years old, yes she is probably pretty spent if she has stopped laying.

Also squatting is not always "romantic." It is a sign of submission too. When hens tangle, one, the less dominant, will squat to show surrender to the more dominant hen to end the squabble.

So your hen may be feeling insecure and squatting out of submission. If she is molting or her hormones are changing as she ages and thus not producing, which can throw them off, she may no longer feel certain of her place in the flock and is attempting to show more submission.
