I'm starting to believe that the shade had more to do with temp drop than did the exhaust fan...But like you said, any extra ventilation is a good thing

Any extra ventilation is indeed a good thing. I battle this every Summer. I suck cooler air in from under the shady trees with one fan and then blow hotter air out with another fan so it doesn't get trapped up by the roof. My temps will drop 5 degrees sometimes just by me switching the fan from low to high. 5 degrees can make a huge difference especially when it's, say, from 95 to 100.I'm starting to believe that the shade had more to do with temp drop than did the exhaust fan...But like you said, any extra ventilation is a good thing
It will help deflect some heat gain from the metal for sure.I guess if you count the plywood as insulation, then yes a little.
