Why Would They SenD Me A Cockerel? IsThatCommon? WhatIsThE PointOf A Cockerel?

Did you order pullets or straight run? Even if you ordered pullets, most hatcheries only guarantee 90% on sexed birds which means that you are likely to get a cockerel or two in your order. Of course in straight run orders half or more of them can be cockerels.

Maybe you can sell him - he a nice looking bird - even though he is very uncomfortable in that pose

It's a common practice for McMurray to send out "exotic" males... IMO, there are a couple of reasons:

1. most male chicks meet an early and gruesome death if not sold. It's a way to keep from having to destroy the extra male chicks.

2. Advertisement and future sales. I got a Blue Andalusian cockerel with my order. I had ordered SSH( and I ordered a cockerel of those too lol), BAs, and more Ancona. So now I'm all excited to breed 'Mr. Blue' to my new BAs... And McMurray is entirely responsible for next springs influx of chicks

If you can't keep a roo, send him to the dinner table as soon as he crows, but roosters can actually be a lot of fun if they get correct training; make sure you handle the Hamburg male ALOT if you want to keep him: SSH are very flighty and skittish birds.

Ha-ha, that's awesome, been there, done that lol ... Cockerel is just a young male, not sexually mature yet..

And yeah, you might find it can benefit the flock dynamics when you get a good rooster to protect the hens, and the bonus of chicks; possibilities are endless lol... See why they tossed a male in there?
