Expanding my flock and need advice on a few things....

After further reading, I am now wondering if it's not molting, but just feathers from the broody hen. I read that because they get so malnourished when broody, they often shed most of their feathers and re-grow them after being broody. I broke her all the other times, but it was messing up the pecking order and stressing out the other 2, so this time I let her go and she lost a lot of weight, her comb got really dull, etc. They might be all her feathers.

Also, I got an egg today from one of the others, so that reinforces my thoughts. As long as one of them goes broody, I don't care who it is. I was avoiding buying chicks because I thought that it would be a much smoother transition into the flock if one of the hens hatched them. They are so much trouble as it is, I want to do this in the easiest way possible. I ordered the eggs from Murray McMurray shipped. It was pretty pricey, which is why I'm trying to encourage someone to go broody. The egg today was laid in a pile with the 2 fake eggs, so I left it there. There are now 3 eggs and I'm hoping it will inspire someone!
