Hi all I'm a new member here and could really use some help. One of my Khaki Campbell girls had gotten Vent Gleet somehow and was having egg binding issues. I brought her inside and kept her in a large dog kennel covered so she had no light to get her to stop laying and treated her with Monistat in her vent once a day and fed her yogurt. It took about 5 days for her to finally stop laying. The poor thing would bleed after every time she laid. She developed a prolapse which I treated with Prep H. I got the vent gleet issue resolved and then she developed a secondary infection. I took her to the vet and she was put on Antibiotics. She had this discharge that was different from the vent gleet. This would dry around her vent and was near impossible to remove. Long story short , her vent was closing off and she couldn't poop anymore. I almost lost her. In desperation, I saved her with a piece of 3/8" fuel line which I modified with a stop and inserted into her vent. Her infection is gone after 3 weeks of the antibiotics and she is perfectly healthy with the device I made. Problem is she can never develop another egg or she would die. I have her light cut to only about 6 hours a day and I'm waiting on her vet to research the Suprelorin implants. It's life or death for her so she should easily qualify for the implants since they're FDA approved just not for ducks. I researched and found on the FDA website that off-label drugs can be used when it's life threatening. My question is, does anyone have experience with the implants? Her flight feathers are starting to come back in after molt and I'm getting real nervous. Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Some on here have had success with the implants. My guess is that they are your best hope for her. Good luck. :welcome sorry for the circumstances.

Thank you! Fingers crossed her vet will do it, if not I'll be searching for a vet that will. She seemed hesitant at first and I sent her a bunch of information from the FDA and some case studies on the implants.

I am so sorry as well for your circumstances. It is awesome that you have been able to get vet care for her.

This vet is really an awesome lady. She is a farm vet and deals mostly with livestock. It took some time to find someone that would see her and try. She doesn't have a lot of Duck experience but she knows they have differences from chickens and researches before she medicates, etc.

I don't quite understand her reluctance. It's not like you intend on eating the duck. If she can't suggest a better avenue of treatment why not go for it ?

That's my thought too. She is very young and just graduated from Cornell in 2017 so I think it's just something new to her and she wants to be 100 percent sure.

Edit your thread to mention the implant so members who have used them can reply I know there was someone just recently who had their duck implanted but can’t remember her name. :welcome

Thank you . Good idea but I can't figure out how to edit the Title. It lets me edit the body of the post or the tags but I don't see an option to edit the title.
