Yeah I have been thinking too it might be wise to keep the little dark cockerel back and at least get some chicks out of him, and see what comes of it.
You say you tried both methods, color vs type in seperate pens, which is kind of what we are discussing here. What are the odds of then successfully blending the resulting families. I take it did not go well for you, or were you leary of diluting the better colored family by using the typier off color line ?
