Experienced horse people- I have an emergency -SHE"S DOING BETTER

I would cold hose her the area (10-15 min.), bute, clean and dress wound but I agree I would not wap it. She sounds like she is just getting agitated in the stall so I agree with above post and would put her in a pen with room to move instead. Good Luck

I agree with no wrapping, bute, Cold hose, clean any cuts (furison), and confine her to a no running area. If you dont mind me asking, how did she get it caught in there and can she do it again?

Thanks for all the support gang. She is quieter right now in her stall. (I never lock them in, they have run ins) I am going to keep her in until evening grain and bute. Swollen, but she is putting some weight on it, more than before. She could do more damage in her stall than out in the pen.

Chickenrunnin, I am going to remove these hay racks as soon as I can get them out. The stands are still in a foot of ice pack. I've had these racks for 12 years, without one incident. I think she was going to kick one of the boys away and got her foot caught. (she is a bit of a piggy). But the minute I saw her thrashing, I thought, never again with those. It keeps the goats from stepping and messing all over the hay, and keeps the hay out of the muck, but of course the horses always pull it out of there to eat off the ground. So, no more racks.

I am still a nervous wreck and stressed. I'm not better than my horses in a crisis. (But I got 2 roosts made today.

I am gping to drink this in about a half hour after a bubble bath.

It's the best beer in the world, almost tastes like raspberry champagne. I've been saving it since Christmas.

Thank you all so much and I'll update after we get xrays.

I won't add my $.02 since it is pretty well covered above. I am sending healing thoughts and no fractures your way.

It never ceases to amaze me what animals can get into with things they have been around for years without incident.

I hope she is fine- just banged up... Some rest and bute.

Now I'd like to try that beer.... where do you find that?

Thanks MC. She does seem to be doing ok.

The beer. You can buy it in specialty wine/beer stores or they can order it. Lindemans Belgian Framboise Beer. It honestly doesn't taste much like beer. I get it a few times a year. Expensive, but for someone who doesn't drink much, it is exquisite. So I opened it and am sitting by the fire trying to relax.

You have some good advice here. I just wanted to add that you need to make sure your horse doesn't go romping in a large area at this point while on pain meds. I normally don't medicate for pain in such an injury if the horse will go romping in a pasture and hurt itself more. I use the cold hose for swelling if I cannot confine the horse. Confined to a stall or small pen would be better. Bute will help the the swelling go down.

The bute is still a good idea to help not only with the pain but to minimize the swelling. No peroxide at all to clean or treat the wound - it debrides the good flesh and causes proud flesh to develop.

I'm with the group that says to clean with Betadine and wrap with either a diaper and vetwrap or a track bandage to keep it clean until the vet can inspect.

Absolutely no dispect to your farrier but I would still rely on the professional advice and consultation of my vet - I love my farrier and he is very good friends with my vet but I always concede to the 8 years of school my vet has to diagnose and treat injuries.

Bute and rest... like the others said... I'd only put some Fura ointment on it if the cut scabs, and if it scabs I'd rub the Fura around the scab just to soften the skin and not put too much on the wound. She should be okay... I had one horse this last year get a nasty cut on his hind cannon bone. That was around Christmas and now we're still treating it... If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Hope she gets feeling better soon.
