    Hello all!

I am the first time owner of twelve three week old chicks with a blend of RIR, JG and Brown Leghorns. They are going to be unrestricted free range with about 15 acres to wander around on. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to acquire an older chicken to "show them the ropes". If so, what sex, what breed, how old and where should I get it from? I would really appreciate responses.

    Thanks!

I personally don't believe a older chicken is really going to show them very much. A lot of it will be instinct along with learning experience. If you were going to add a chicken to show the ropes I would look for a bird that has been free ranging most of it's life. It wouldn't be nearly as tame as your chicks but would probably have alot of survival experience which could be beneficial.
