Explaining Chicken Math

lol!

We wanted 4 pullets, but I wanted heritage breeds. I found a place that raises them and noticed that they ship day olds. I swooned because I've always wanted to raise day olds. (Darn you Pacific National Exhibition animal barns!). So I wanted to order 8 to get pullets that I need. But then I noticed all of the awesome breeds and decided that we had to keep six pullets and get one of each kind. So we were up to 12 day olds. But then the lady said that she wouldn't run the incubator for only a dozen, so I found 2 friends that each wanted 4 hens, found another breed I like and as a result 28 day olds will be arriving on Wednesday!!

PS- My one friend I enabled has now gone from 4 pullets, to as many extra pullets that there are and a rooster :)

So when you find out there are 20 cockerels, and only 8 pullets, you will have to order 48 more chicks.

Chicken math is gonna get you worse than you thought, and you don't even know it! LOL

I didn't explain anything but while the coop and run was being built I did the chicken math to figure out how many square feet I needed for 20 chickens but at the time I only had 11! Get my drift? If not make sure your man builds you a coop to house twice as many chickens as you have already! But don't tell him why you need to know how many square feet the inside of the coop is or the run. Or tell him you are trying to figure out how much bedding you are going to need.

I feel like i need to block myself from calling MPC ...like the phone number on the back of a lottery ticket....there should be a chickens anonymous

Okay, I am not into chicks in the winter. I worry about power outages (and my generator is broken) and heat lamps going out. Then I worry about putting little ones out in the cold "cold chicken" (well, they aren't turkeys!). HOWEVER ...
I really want BCM, and I COULD keep them in the basement until Spring. The people on the site I spend most of my time on keep talking about hatching, and BCM. So if I were to get some straight run chicks, I could keep a pen just for them, and ... I am in so much trouble! Forget Chick Days at TSC. I won't make it through October without more chicks!

Lol motorcycle I want them too, that's what had me calling MPC, but I ended up just getting a mystery box of five "rares" . I already know I want a silkie a ncm and a cream legbar next year.....I love the variety in the egg colors and the chickens are just so beautiful. Basically I already have plans for a second coop ...I thinking maybe bantams so I can have more lol

I couldnt help getting more chicks either. SOOOOOO I picked up 4 japanese bantam chicks at a chicken swap 2weeks ago and then found out 3 out of the 4 are boys(2 boys will be rehomed) sooooo of course I had to go get more chicks so the bantams have enough chicken warmth for the winter so I found a local lady and bought 4 straight run Marans 2FBCM 1Splash and 1Blue YAY!!!!!! Fingers

crossed all the marans are girls. Im in the process of putting and addition on one of my small coops(my family thinks Im crazy)
